LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

vs. Connecticut (12/21): The Manchester Monarchs rallied from a two goal deficit but fell to the Connecticut Whale, 5-2, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. Center Marc-Andre Cliche scored both goals for the Monarchs. Connecticut registered goals from left wing Martin Hrivik, left wing Chris Kreider, center Kris Newbury (two) and center Kelsey Tessier. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (7-12-2) took his 12th loss of the season making 19 saves on 23 shots. Monarchs netminder Peter Mannino (5-2-0) made five saves on five shots in relief of Jones. Whale goaltender Cameron Talbot (10-10-0) earned his 10th win of the season stopping 39 out of 41 shots. Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Connecticut was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

vs. Portland (12/22): Seven of eight goals were scored on special teams as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Portland Pirates, 5-3, in game six of the VIP Cup series at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. The Monarchs received goals from left wing Dwight King, right wing Tyler Toffoli (three) and center Linden Vey. The Pirates tallied goals from left wing Rob Klinkhammer, center Andy Miele and center Ethan Werek. Monarchs goaltender Peter Mannino (6-2-0) earned his sixth win of the season stopping 27-of-30 shots. Pirates goaltender Chad Johnson (10-6-0) took his sixth loss of the season making 31 saves on 35 shots. Manchester went 3-for-6 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Portland Pirates (16-11-1-1) sit in first place in the Atlantic Division with 34 points. The Providence Bruins (15-10-0-2) are in second place in division with 32 points. The Worcester Sharks (14-10-1-2) rank third in the division with 31 points. The Manchester Monarchs (13-12-2-2) sit in fourth place in the division with 30 points. The St. John's IceCaps (14-16-0-1) are in fifth place in the division with 29 points.

The Monarchs are 6-4-0-1 on the road and are 7-8-2-1 at home this season.

Manchester is 9-1-0-0 overall when they play on a Saturday this season.

Manchester set a franchise single-game record with nine goals in a 9-2 victory against the Connecticut Whale on Saturday, December 8.

The Monarchs had 14 skaters record at least one point in a 9-2 record breaking victory on Saturday, December 8, including nine multiple point skaters.

Manchester scored three power play goals in a game for the third time this season in a 5-3 victory against the Pirates on Saturday, December 22.

The Monarchs have the fourth best success rate in the league when faced with a penalty kill on the road (87.5%).

Right wing Brandon Kozun (8-14=22) is tied for the team lead with right wing Tyler Toffoli (13-9=22) in points with 22 each.

Kozun leads the team in assists with 14.

Kozun is tied with center Linden Vey (8-13=21) for second place on the team with eight goals each.

Kozun tallied two goals and an assist in the Monarchs 9-2 victory over the Whale on Saturday, December 8.

Kozun leads the team with three game-winning goals this season which is tied for seventh place in the American Hockey League.

Kozun tallied the game-winning goals against the Sharks on Saturday, October 27, against the Binghamton Senators on Sunday, October 28 and the IceCaps on Wednesday, November 7.

Toffoli tallied his second hat trick of the season and second against the Pirates in a 5-3 victory on Saturday, December 22.

Toffoli has eight goals in six games against the Pirates this season which also leads all VIP Cup skaters.

Toffoli leads the team and is tied for second place in the AHL among rookies with 13 goals this season.

Toffoli's 13 goals are also tied for ninth among league skaters. Toffoli's 22 points are tied for fourth in the league among rookie skaters.

Toffoli leads the team and is tied for eighth place in the league with five power play goals this season.

Toffoli had a five-game point streak (6-2=8) snapped in a 4-0 loss to the Pirates on Sunday, December 2.

Vey appeared in his 100th AHL game (all with the Monarchs) on Saturday, December 15 against the Adirondack Phantoms.

Vey is second on the team in assists with 13. Center Andrei Loktionov (5-12=17) and left wing Tanner Pearson (6-11=17) are tied for fourth place on the Monarchs with 17 points each. Loktionov is in third place on the team with 12 assists.

Loktionov leads the team and is tied for second in the AHL with two shorthanded goals this season.

Pearson has five points (2-3=5) in his last five games.

Defenseman Slava Voynov (6-9=15) is tied with left wing Dwight King (5-10=15) for sixth place on the Monarchs with 15 points each.

Voynov's six goals lead team defensemen.

Voynov leads the team with 87 shots on goal this season.

King is tied for the league lead with two shorthanded assists this season.

Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk (3-9=12) is in eighth place on the Monarchs with 12 points.

Bodnarchuk leads the team in plus/minus with a plus-9 rating.

Bodnarchuk is tied with Voynov and defenseman Jake Muzzin (1-9=10) for the team lead amongst blueliners with nine assists each.

Left wing Marc-Andre Cliche (5-6=11) is ninth on the Monarchs with 11 points.

With two goals on Friday, December 21 and two assists on Saturday, December 22, Cliche posted back-to-back multiple point games for the first time this season.

Cliche has four points (2-2=4) in his last two games.

Cliche ranks second on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 312.

Cliche has scored 63 goals in his career with the Monarchs which ties him for eighth place on the franchise's all-time list with center Yanick Lehoux.

Cliche ranks ninth on the Monarchs all-time points list with 142 and ranks 10th on the franchise's all-time assist list with 79.

Muzzin ranks 10th on the Monarchs with 10 points (1-9=10).

Defenseman Thomas Hickey (2-7=9) is tied with right wing Stefan Legein (1-8=9) for 11th place on the Monarchs with nine points each.

Hickey scored his first goal of the season in a 3-2 loss to the Sharks on Sunday, December 9.

Hickey's second goal of the season came during the Monarchs annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Sunday, December 16. The goal sparked thousands of stuffed animals to be tossed onto the ice by fans in attendance.

Legein had a three-game assist and point streak (0-3=3) snapped in a 3-2 loss to the Sharks on Sunday, December 9.

Defenseman Nick Deslauriers (2-6=8) is in 13th place on the Monarchs with eight points.

Deslauriers scored a goal in consecutive games for the first time in his professional career with tallies on Friday, November 23 against the Sharks and Saturday, November 24 against the Springfield Falcons.

Left wing Richard Clune (2-5=7) is in 14th place on the Monarchs with seven points.

Clune leads the team with 82 penalty minutes.

Clune's 770 penalty minutes rank second on the Monarchs all-time career penalty minutes list.

Defenseman David Kolomatis (3-3=6) ranks 15th on the Monarchs with six points.

All three of Kolomatis' goals this season have come when the team was on a power play. Center Andy Andreoff (3-2=5) is tied with left wing Jordan Nolan (2-3=5) for 16th place on the Monarchs with five points each.

Defenseman Bryan Rodney (2-2=4) is in 18th place on the Monarchs with four points.

Rodney made his Monarchs debut on Friday, December 7 scoring two goals in the game.

Rodney recorded his second multi-point game with two assists in a 3-2 loss to the Sharks on Sunday, December 9.

Right wing Brian O'Neill (1-2=3), center Jordan Weal (1-2=3) and defenseman Andrew Campbell (0-3=3) are tied for 19th place on the Monarchs with three points each.

Campbell returned from an upper body injury on Friday, December 7 in Providence. Campbell had been out of the line-up since Sunday, October 28 missing 16 games.

Campbell's 310 games rank third all-time on the Monarchs all-time games played list.

Center Robbie Czarnik (2-0=2) ranks 22nd on the Monarchs with two points.

Czarnik recorded his second goal of the season against the Falcons in a 5-4 loss on Friday, November 30.

Right wing Justin Johnson (0-0=0) made his season debut against the Bruins on Friday, November 16. Left wing David Meckler (0-0=0) made his season debut against the Sharks on Sunday, November 4.

Meckler holds the franchise record for games played with 352 in a Monarchs uniform. Meckler's 350th game came against the Pirates on Sunday, November 25.

Goaltender Martin Jones (7-12-2) has a 2.57 goals-against-average, a 0.913 save percentage and has stopped 558-of-611 shots attempted in 21 games this season.

Jones' 558 saves this season are ranked eighth among league netminders.

Jones appeared in 100th game in a Monarchs uniform in a 3-2 shootout loss against the Falcons on Sunday, December 16.

Goaltender Peter Mannino (6-2-0) has a 2.12 goal-against-average and a 0.927 save percentage in 10 games this season.
