Offensive Onslaught Ends in Overtime Loss for Monsters
December 26, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Cleveland Monsters News Release
On the day he received American Hockey League Player of the Week honors, Lake Erie Monsters forward David van der Gulik scored twice, giving him six goals over his last five games, but it wasn't enough as the Monsters (15-13-2-1) fell by a 7-6 score in overtime to the Rochester Americans (14-11-2-1) Wednesday at Blue Cross Arena. Five different Monsters had two points apiece in the game, which snapped the Monsters three-game winning streak, but extended their unbeaten-in-regulation streak to four games.
Brad Malone struck first for the Monsters, scoring his sixth goal of the season when he fired a shot from the left circle over the shoulder of Rochester goalie David Leggio at 1:53 of the opening period, with an assist going to Dean Strong.
Rochester evened the score when a T.J. Brennan point shot on the power play was tipped in by Evan Rankin at the 5:18 mark.
Mike Connolly scored on a shot from point-blank to regain the one-goal lead for the Monsters, with assists from Malone and Karl Stollery, at 8:48 of the first period. Connolly's fourth goal of the season gave the Monsters a 2-1 lead.
Before the period came to a close, Rochester scored two unanswered goals; a shorthanded tally from Cody Hodgson at 16:15 and another power play goal from Brennan with 15 seconds left in the frame. Rochester led 3-2 after 20 minutes, and Brennan had three first period points for the Amerks.
The Monsters scored three unanswered goals in the second period; the first of which extended van der Gulik's goal scoring streak to five games, a Monsters season-best. van der Gulik took a feed in front and tapped the puck past Leggio for his ninth goal, assisted by Paul Carey and Andrew Agozzino just 26 seconds into the frame.
A little more than three minutes later, Jamie MacQueen scored following a pass across the slot from Mathieu Roy, skating in his first game as a Monster after joining the team earlier in the day. Patrick Bordeleau also assisted on MacQueen's second goal of the season and second in as many games.
With 35 seconds remaining in the second period, Stollery followed the Monsters rush up the ice, and Agozzino spotted Stollery open in the high slot. Stollery wristed a puck by Leggio to give the Monsters a 5-3 lead. Stollery's second of the season was also assisted by Mark Olver.
Hodgson and Brennan scored for Rochester in the first 5:28 of the third period to tie the game at 5-5 before van der Gulik put the Monsters back in front by a goal. Shorthanded, Carey pushed a puck through the neutral zone to a streaking van der Gulik, who pulled away from a pair of Rochester defenders and went in alone to beat Leggio for his second goal of the game at 11:22 of the third period, making the score 6-5.
At 14:41 of the third period, Mancari tied the game at 6-6 on a long shot from the right side for Rochester, and at 2:40 of overtime Rochester's Marcus Foligno scored the game-winner to give Rochester the 7-6 victory.
Calvin Pickard stopped 26 of 33 shots for the Monsters and is 6-8-1. David Leggio stopped 32 of 38 shots for Rochester and is 13-8-1.
The Monsters play Rochester again on Friday night in Buffalo at 7:05 PM, with all the action airing live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
