Crunch Hang on for 5-3 Win over Binghamton
December 26, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY- The Syracuse Crunch defeated East Division rivals the Binghamton Senators 5-3 tonight at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Crunch took a commanding 3-0 lead but the Senators fought back to make it a one-goal game halfway through the third period. The Crunch hung on and added an empty net goal in the final minute of play to improve their overall record to 18-7-1-3 and bring their road record to 12-3-0-2.
Mark Barberio opened the scoring with a five-on-three power-play goal with 1:06 to play in the opening frame. Barberio's low shot from the point beat Binghamton Senators goaltender Ben Bishop for the defenseman's fifth goal of the season with assists from Cory Conacher and Brett Connolly. Conacher doubled the Crunch lead with unassisted goal 28 seconds into the second period.
Syracuse extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal from Radko Gudas 9:51 into the second period. JT Wyman won a faceoff back to Gudas who one-timed the puck past Bishop for the three-goal lead.
The Senators got their first goal of the game at the 11:07 mark of the second period. Stephane Da Costa redirected a Mike Hoffman shot past Tokarski to cut the Crunch lead to 3-1.
Syracuse responded with a power-play goal by JT Brown at the start of the third period. Brown one-timed a cross-crease pass from Ondrej Palat to give the Crunch a 4-1 lead just 1:02 into the final frame.
The Senators cut the Crunch lead in half when Jakob Silfverberg scored a power-play goal by skating down the right wing and scoring with a snap shot over Tokarski's left shoulder 5:23 into the third period. Jean-Gabriel Pageau made it a one-goal game with a breakaway goal 11:35 into the period.
With an extra skater on the ice for Binghamton, Wyman created a turnover in the Senators offensive zone and found Angelidis who scored an empty net goal with 45 seconds to play for a final score of 5-3.
The Crunch return to the War Memorial for back-to-back home games against the Norfolk Admirals on Dec. 28 and St. John's IceCaps on Dec. 29.
