
Monarchs Open Exhibition Schedule With A Draw

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Manchester Monarchs opened their 2002 exhibition schedule with a 3-3 tie vs. the Springfield Falcons on Monday at the Springfield Civic Center. Leon Hayward 's (Seattle, WA) tip-in goal with just 26 seconds left on the third period clock enabled the Monarchs to gain the draw. The goal was scored seconds after the Monarchs pulled netminder Jeff Sanger (Madison, WI) and replaced him with an extra attacker.
The Monarchs also received scoring from Dan Riva (Framingham, MA) and Brian McCullough (Burr Ridge, IL). Riva's goal made it a 1-1 first period score, and McCullough's tally provided the Monarchs with a 2-1 first period lead. The Monarchs lead lasted until the Falcons rallied with a pair of third period goals, setting the stage for Hayward's heroics.
Goaltenders Alexei Volkov (Yekateringburg, Russia) and Sanger shared net duties for the Monarchs. Each played 30 minutes. The Monarchs continue their exhibition schedule when they host the Portland Pirates at the Tri-Town Arena in Hooksett, NH on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.. The team also travels to Lewiston, ME to meet the Portland Pirates at the Central Maine Civic Center on Friday, October 4 at 7:05 p.m. The Monarchs conclude their preseason schedule by traveling to Lowell, MA to meet the Lowell Lock Monsters at the Salem Ice Center on Saturday, October 5. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
The Monarchs begin their second season when they renew their rivalry with the Lowell Lock Monsters on Friday, October 11. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m.
