Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Center Riley Holzapfel scored the lone goal of the game leading the St. John's IceCaps to a 1-0 victory over the Manchester Monarchs at Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
Manchester (1-1-0-0) is tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with two points. St. John's (2-0-0-0) leads the Atlantic Division with four points.
"Defensively they were good and we were too," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We didn't generate enough offense tonight. You have to give their goaltender credit. He made big saves at big times tonight."
At 3:58 of the first period, center Brandon Kozun received the first penalty of the night which resulted in the power play strike. Defenseman Zach Redmond's slap pass was redirected off the stick of Holzapfel at the right doorstep of the Monarchs net. The puck slipped past Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones to finish off the bang-bang play. Defenseman Mark Flood assisted on Holzapfel's first goal of the season.
Jones (1-1-0) earned his first loss of the season stopping 22-of-23 shots. IceCaps goaltender Peter Mannino (1-0) earned his first win of the season with 23 saves.
