Portland Pirates News Release
Bridgeport, CT - Mathieu Beaudoin scored twice and Andy Miele recorded a goal and an assist in his professional debut to lead the Portland Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of an opening night crowd of 7,343 at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.
Brett Hextall also found the back of the net in his debut, and Curtis McElhinney made 33 saves to give Portland their second straight opening night victory.
Tomas Marcinko and Aaron Ness led the Bridgeport attack with a goal each as the Sound Tigers dropped to 0-1-0-0 on the new season.
The two teams traded goals in the first period with Hextall connecting on a feed from Miele and fellow Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Duncan at 3:03, and Marcinko providing a quick answer for Bridgeport a minute later at 4:30. Following a first period where they were outshot by a 16-5 margin, the Pirates answered with a pair of quick goals in the second on a Miele wrist shot from the top of the circle and a Beaudoin power-play strike. With 4:22 remaining in the second period, Ness cut the Portland lead to one on a wrist shot that glanced off Pirates defenseman Tyler Eckford. In the final period, Beaudoin capitalized on a crossing pass from Matt Watkins to set the final margin at 4-2.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Pirates 35-33 as McElhinney earned the victory in his Pirates preseason debut.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates: 1. Beaudoin, 2. McElhinney and 3. Miele.
