
Bulldogs Open Season with 5-2 Win Over Americans

Hamilton, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Rochester Americans 5-2 on Saturday night in their 2011-2012 home and season opener in front 6,123 fans at Copps Coliseum. Brock Trotter had two goals and two assists while Frederic St. Denis recorded two goals in the win.
The Bulldogs opened the game's scoring at 10:15 of the first frame. Aaron Palushaj wrapped around the right side of the net and slid a pass out to the slot. The puck ended up at the left point where St. Denis wired a slapshot past the left pad of Rochester starting goaltender David Leggio.
The 'Dogs took a 2-0 lead at 3:40 of the second stanza while on the power play. Trotter fed a pass from the left side of the net to the right point, where Frederic St. Denis rifled a one-timer past the glove of Leggio for his second goal of the game. Hamilton then scored a 5-on-3 goal at 4:55 of the second period as Mike Blunden passed the puck from the left corner to the slot, where Brock Trotter received the puck and wristed it over the goaltender's glove.
The Americans got on the scoreboard at 10:59 of the middle frame. Derek Whitmore snapped a wrist shot from the left wing which was stopped by Bulldogs starting goaltender Nathan Lawson. The rebound bounced into the slot, where Zack Kassian whacked at it but also stopped by Lawson. Jonathan Parker got the second rebound and buried it underneath Lawson.
The 'Dogs took a 4-1 lead at 14:44 of the second frame as Ian Schultz carried the puck down the right wing and slid a pass into the slot. The pass was then tipped by the Rochester defender and was redirected under Leggio.
Hamilton got its fifth goal of the game at 5:24 of the third period on a penalty shot by Brock Trotter. A Rochester player covered the puck with his hand in the crease giving Trotter the penalty shot. Trotter faked a shot before going his backhand and flipping a puck over the leg of Leggio for his second goal of the game.
Rochester made the score 5-2 at 17:52 of the final stanza. Corey Tropp was streaking down the right wing and passed the puck into the slot. Colin Stuart took the pass and wired the puck over the glove of Lawson.
The 'Dogs are returning to St. John's, Newfoundland for two games against the St. John's Ice Caps on Friday October 14th at 6:00 P.M. EST and Saturday October 15th at 6:00 P.M. EST.
