Norfolk Admirals News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - John Mitchell scored twice and Nate Guenin had a goal and an assist as the Norfolk Admirals (28-26-4-1) erased a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Charlotte Checkers (35-21-2-3), 3-2, on Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.
The Admirals have once again closed to within three points of the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference with 17 games remaining in the regular season.
Brayden Irwin had two assists for Norfolk, while goaltender Frederik Andersen (16-11-1) improved to 9-1-0 over his last 11 games by stopping 26 of 28 shots. Charlotte (4-3-0-0, 8 pts) now leads Norfolk (3-3-1-0, 7 pts) by just one point in the GEICO Challenge Cup with the series finale set for March 26th in Charlotte.
The Admirals conclude their three-game road trip on Friday against the Syracuse Crunch and Saturday against the Binghamton Senators. They return to Scope next Tuesday and Wednesday nights to host the Adirondack Phantoms.
The Checkers took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Matt Marquardt found the rebound of a Casey Pierro-Zabotel shot and scored at 10:51.
Norfolk tied the game at 1-1 late in the second period. Jordan Hendry sent a pass from behind the goal line into the slot. Mitchell accepted the pass between the hashmarks and scored his first goal of the game at 19:08 of the second period.
The Admirals took a 2-1 lead early in the third period with a power play goal. Luca Caputi sent a pass from the right circle to Guenin in the slot. Guenin one-timed the puck past Charlotte goaltender John Muse at 3:17 for his third goal of the season.
Norfolk's lead doubled to two goals just over three minutes later. Guenin sent a shot from the high slot that Mitchell deflected past Muse for his ninth goal of the season at 6:35 for a 3-1 lead.
The Checkers cut into their deficit to one goal less than three minutes later. Brett Sutter found a rebound in the low slot and backhanded a shot past Andersen, making the score 3-2 in favor of Norfolk at 9:27.
However, the Admirals limited the Checkers to only five shots in the third period, and Charlotte was unable to find the equalizer despite a late power play and pulling Muse in favor of a six-on-four skater advantage.
Muse (5-4-0) stopped 35 of 38 shots in the loss.
Norfolk was 1-for-5 on the power play. Charlotte was 0-for-5.
