Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates put on a show at the Civic Center on Wednesday night, tallying 6 goals en route to a 6-3 victory over the Adirondack Phantoms. The win snaps the Pirates 3 game winless streak, and puts Portland just 2 points back from the Atlantic Division leading Providence Bruins.

The first period was highlighted by special teams play. After the Phantoms went on their first power play of the night, Jordan Szwarz opened the scoring with David Rundblad feed Szwarz from behind Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe. Szwarz's goal, his 9th of the year, came at the 7:04 mark of the first and was the 8th shorthanded goal of the season for Portland. Chris Brown got the Pirates scoring on the power play started, tallying his 23rd of the season and 11th power play goal of the year at the 11:39 mark. Former University of Maine Black Bear Matt Mangene closed the gap for the Phantoms, tallying his 7th of the year at 17:30 to cut the Pirates' lead in half.

The Pirates would extend their lead in the second. David Rundblad scored his second goal since returning from Phoenix and 8th of the year at the 15:54 of the second period, the second power play goal of the game for Portland. Adirondack's Oliver Lauridsen was called off for cross checking. David Rundblad scored his 8th of the season by taking a half wall feed from Andy Miele and picked the corner off of Scott Munroe. Munroe could have stopped the wrist shot but Conner was right in front with a perfect screen on the goalie. After 2 periods, the score was 3-1 in favor of the Pirates.

The third period started off with a bang, as the Pirates were awarded their second penalty shot of the year. Alexandre Bolduc was hooked from behind on a breakaway attempt and the referee awarded Bolduc the shot. Bolduc tried to go five hole on Munroe, but was denied, putting the Pirates at 0-2 on penalty shots this season. Just over three minutes later, Bolduc would redeem himself, getting another breakaway chance and roofing it over Munroe for his 22nd of the year. 59 seconds later Andy Miele's 12th goal of the season gave the Pirates a 5-1 lead. However, a scrum at 12:11 of the third period resulted in Brendan Shinnimin and Boris Valabik each being assessed misconducts, with Shinnimin picking up a 5 minute major for boarding. Adirondack took advantage of the extended opportunity, with Mitch Wahl and Jason Akeson each tallying goals on Chad Johnson over the 5 minute stretch. The Pirates' Brett Hextall gave Portland the 3 goal advantage once again, taking a pass from Evan Brophey and slapping it past Munroe to seal the Pirates' victory.

The Pirates improved their record to 34-21-3-2 overall, snapping a 3 game winless streak at home and a 3 game winless streak overall. Adirondack drops to 23-31-2-3 on the season.

The Pirates get back to action Saturday night as they face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a rematch from last Saturday's tilt. Puck drop is set for 7 PM on Steve Poapst Bobblehead Night, presented by Moody's Collusion Center. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a bobblehead of the Pirates' Hall of Fame defenseman. Tickets are still available by calling (207) 828-4665 ext. 350 or online at ticketmaster.com.
