Kansas City Mavericks News Release
Allen, TX (December 7, 2014)- The Missouri Mavericks (9-10-0-0) saw their three-game win streak come to an end on Sunday when they fell to the Central Division leading Allen Americans (14-4-0-1) by a 6-2 score. Josh Brittain and Andrew Courtney scored the Mavs only goals of the contest. Missouri now falls to 0-3 on the season against the Americans.
"We played a very good first 20 minutes but then got away from what we were doing well and it cost us," said Missouri Head Coach Richard Matvichuk. "We battled hard in the third period but it was too little too late and now we just have to regroup and get back on another win streak."
The Mavericks got off to a great start with Brittain scoring his seventh goal of the season just 43 seconds into the opening period. Sebastien Geoffrion and Steven Tarasuk earned the assists.
Allen would come back to tie the game with an ugly goal from Gary Steffes, his 13th goal of the season, that came off a scramble in front of the net that somehow saw the puck crawl across the line.
The story of the first period was the Mavericks penalty kill which faced three power plays against including a four-minute double minor. With the three first period kills, the Mavs had killed 15 straight shorthanded chances.
The second period is where the Americans do their most damage and Sunday was no different. Allen had scored 30 goals in the middle frame this season and they added to that with goals from Greger Hanson, Jack Combs, Steffes and Brett Lyon. Hanson's came while the team was shorthanded and Combs was off a great feed from Steffes for his 13th goal of the season. Steffes then regained the team lead with his 14th goal of the season (second of the night) and Lyon scored late in the period off a long-range shot that went through a ton of traffic.
The Missouri goal in the second period came from Courtney who took a rebound off a Riley Gill save and pushed it into the empty net for his fifth goal of the season but Missouri trailed 5-2 after 40 minutes.
In the third period, Chad Costello scored his 12th goal of the season for Allen capping off the scoring in the game. Costello finished the game with a goal and an assist.
Steffes led the way for Allen with two goals and an assist and Hanson finished with a goal and two helpers.
Allen outshot the Mavs by a 30-25 count as Mike Clemente takes the loss stopping 24 shots and Gill turning away 23 shots.
Missouri is back on the ice on Tuesday night when they host the Brampton Beast at Independence Events Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM (CST).
