Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans won their 14th game of the season on Sunday afternoon, handing Missouri a 6-1 loss at Allen Event Center improving to 14-4-0-1 on the season and increasing their lead to four points over second place Tulsa.
Gary Steffes led the charge for Allen scoring two goals, his 13th and 14th of the season, while assisting on another. Greger Hanson scored shorthanded and assisted on two others. Jack Combs (13), Brett Lyon (3), and Chad Costello (12) also lit the lamp for Allen. Gary Steffes and Trevor Ludwig both finished the game at a plus four.
"We broke it open in the 2nd with a couple goals," said Americans Head Coach Steve Martinson. "Our power play was frustrating in the first period as we didn't react off of what they were doing. We try to be a little too skilled at times. I thought Brett Lyons goals was a big turning point after they cut it to 4-2. Gary Steffes had a great game today."
Josh Brittan (7) and Andrew Courtney (5) were the only goal scorers for Missouri, who dropped to under .500 on the season at 9-10-0-0 and 18 points; that's 11 behind the first place Americans. Former Allen Americans players Scott Langdon and Steven Tarasuk made the trip to Allen, while Dallas Ehrhardt and Riley Grantham were not in the lineup. Richard Matvichuk made his first return to Allen as the Missouri bench boss. Matvichuk was the Americans Associate Coach the last two seasons.
The victory for Allen was their third straight over Missouri this season, and in three games the Americans have outscored the Mavericks 15 to 3, including a 6-0 shutout on November 28th at Independence Events Center.
The Americans next game is this Wednesday night against the Quad City Mallards at 7:05 pm with tickets on sale at Allen Event Center Box Office or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Call (972) 912-1000 for more information.
