Mississippi Braves News Release

Chattanooga, TN - Trailing late in Chattanooga on Saturday night, the Mississippi Braves loaded the bases four times in the last five innings, but each threat went away with a whimper and the Braves suffered a 6-3 loss to the Lookouts at AT&T Field.

Early on, the contest had all the makings of a pitchers' duel, with Jason Hursh for the Braves (26-22) and Andres Santiago for the Lookouts (19-29) each throwing a scoreless first four innings.

But the dam broke in the fifth inning for both teams. Mississippi came through in the fifth when Joe Leonard, Elmer Reyes, David Rohm and Braeden Schlehuber hit four straight singles to start the frame, with the lattermost driving in the first run of the day.

Chattanooga recoiled hard with six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth against Hursh, abruptly ending his day after a masterful first four frames of two-hit shutout baseball.

With one out in the fifth inning, Brian Cavazos-Galvez singled and scored the tying run on a Noel Cuevas triple. After Santiago grounded out softly to the catcher for the second out, the Lookouts rattled off five straight hits: a Darnell Sweeney RBI single to take the lead, a Ryan Adams single, RBI singles for Jeremy Hazelbaker and Daniel Mayora and a two-run triple by O'Koyea Dickson to jump to a 6-1 lead.

Hursh (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking none. Santiago (1-3) picked up his first win of the season, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and a walk.

Mississippi loaded the bases for the second straight inning in the sixth, all with two outs. Seth Loman singled with one away and was forced out at second, with Leonard reaching safely. Reyes walked behind him and Rohm was hit by a pitch in the back of the helmet to load the bases. Santiago plunked Schlehuber to force in a run and that was the end of the Lookouts starter's day.

The Braves got their final run in the eighth. With two away, pinch hitter Barrett Kleinknecht doubled and Mycal Jones singled him home to make it 6-3.

Mississippi loaded the bases in the seventh and ninth innings against the Lookouts' pen but were unable to mount a comeback, stranding 14 total runners on base for the night.

Mike Thomas picked up his first save of the season for Chattanooga, shutting the door on an opportunity with the bases full and nobody away in the ninth for the Braves.

Brandon Cunniff, Ryne Harper, and Ryan Weber combined over the final 3 1/3 innings to shutout the Lookouts in relief.

With the series tied at two, the M-Braves and Lookouts square off in a rubber match on Sunday evening at 5:15 PM CT, with right-hander Aaron Northcraft (4-2, 2.70) slated to take the hill for the Braves against Lookouts right-hander Garrett Gould (1-4, 6.21).
