Mississippi Braves News Release
Chattanooga, TN - The Mississippi Braves came out firing on Sunday night in a 15-2 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field, taking the series three games to two.
Lookouts starter Garrett Gould took the brunt of the blows, allowing eight runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
Mycal Jones and Cedric Hunter reached on walks for the Braves (27-22) in the first and Seth Loman started a monster day at the plate with an RBI single. Hunter came in on a wild pitch to make it 2-0, then Matt Kennelly singled to put them at the corners for a Kyle Kubitza sacrifice fly to pull it to 3-0. Barrett Kleinknecht sent the first pitch he saw on a line to left off the foul pole, his second home run of the year to make it 5-0.
Mississippi tacked on four more and chased Gould in the second. Starting pitcher Aaron Northcraft led off with a single, Jones walked and Gustavo Nunez grounded into a fielder's choice to put them at the corners. Hunter singled to make it 6-0 and chase Gould, and Seth Loman greeted Raydel Sanchez with a three-run home run to left, his seventh of the season, to make it 9-0.
Northcraft (5-2) had a fine day on the mound with such a comfortable lead, firing 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed two runs on six hits, striking out six and walking three. Gould (1-5) took the loss, allowing eight earned on five hits over 1 1/3 innings.
The Lookouts (19-30) scored their only two runs in the third inning. Darnell Sweeney singled and Ryan Adams doubled to put men and second and third. Jeremy Hazelbaker grounded out to first to bring in Sweeney, then O'Koyea Dickson hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it 9-2.
With a pair of doubles by Loman and Kubitza in the fourth, the Braves made it 10-2.
Things stayed relatively quiet through the middle innings as Chasen Shreve and Eric Berger combined to shutout the Lookouts over the final 3 1/3 innings, while Sanchez, Jarret Martin and Hector Nelo held the Braves off the board through the middle frames.
Craig Stem came on in the ninth inning for Chattanooga and the Braves sent 11 men to the plate, scoring five more times on six more hits to stretch it to 15-2. David Rohm, Loman, Matt Kennelly, Kubitza and Kleinknecht rattled off five run-scoring singles to stretch the blowout.
The 15 runs came four shy of tying the M-Braves team record for most tallies in a game (19 in 2013 against Montgomery), while their 20 hits came one shy of a team record (21, set in 2010 against Carolina).
Loman finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored.
Now the Braves return home to host the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, with Monday's opener set for 7:00 PM CT. Right-hander Williams Perez (3-3, 1.67) climbs the hill for the Braves, while the Wahoos have not yet announced a starter.
Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com or TuneIn Radio.
