Recchia's Gem Propels Barons Past Blue Wahoos 5-1

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons picked up a win in their series finale against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Sunday by a score of 5-1 in front of 4,135 fan at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Starter Mike Recchia (2-0,1.50) came through with his second-straight strong outing since being promoted from Class A Winston-Salem, allowing a run on three hits while striking out six over 7.0 IP.

Recchia's strong start allowed the Barons to build a 2-1 lead against Pensacola starter Michael Lorenzen (2-3, 1.99), taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a Trayce Thompson RBI double. Recchia's lone mistake came against Juan Silverio who's third home run in two games tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning.

A fielding error by center fielder Brodie Greene on a ball hit by Thompson allowed Dan Wagner to score in the sixth, giving theBarons a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. They'd go on to add three insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI base hit by Thompson and a two-run ground-rule double off the bat of Kevan Smith to take a 5-1 lead.

Smith finished 3-for-4 in the game while Thompson collected two hits as the Barons improved to 19-30 on the year while Pensacola fell to 22-28.

The Barons return to Regions Field Monday to begin a five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts. The two teams will resume their suspended game from April 28th at 5:15 PM on Monday beforestarting their regularly scheduled game at 7:05 PM. The Barons will send RHP Nick McCully (2-4, 6.41) against RHP Nick Struck (0-3, 6.87).
