Minnesota United FC vs. Colorado Rapids Preview

August 29, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - The Loons will face the Colorado Rapids for the second time of the 2023 season, looking to claim a home win and therefore all six possible regular-season points against the Rapids. In March, Minnesota United traveled to Dick's Sporting Goods Park and defeated the Rapids 2-1, featuring goals scored by Luis Amarilla and Miguel Tapias. With the victory, MNUFC hold a 5-7-2 (W-L-D) record against Colorado, notably a 4-2-0 (W-L-D) record at Allianz Field. Minnesota now sit 10th in the Western Conference with 32 points. With a win, the Loons could cross the threshold to earn a spot as a playoff contender. Colorado, who rank last in the table, are in dire need of a win and three points to climb higher in the West.

HEAD COACH ADRIAN HEATH ON THE MATCH AGAINST THE COLORADO RAPIDS...

"It's strange because they're [Colorado Rapids] in a position where they probably have got no room for error. They're going to have to win most of their games between now and the end of the season to make the playoffs. The one thing about Robin's [Fraser] team is they don't give in. They've got talent as well. They've got pace all over the field. They change around to ask you questions. I don't take anybody lightly, not least of all Robin Fraser's teams because the thing about them is they never quit and that's always a dangerous opponent. We need to go and get the three points and if we play like we did at the weekend, I think it'll give us a good chance."

MIDFIELDER ISMAEL TAJOURI-SHRADI ON THE IMPORTANCE OF POSITIVE RESULTS IN UPCOMING MATCHES...

"We deserved more than a point [against Seattle Sounders FC]. I think we played a very good game, especially in the second half. We managed to get a lot of chances and kept the ball moving well. We wanted the three points but we walked out with one point. Now we're looking forward to the next home game against Colorado [Rapids]. The team is ready for three points and we need to get the three points at home to look forward to the next away game [on Saturday]."

STORYLINES PRESENTED BY BMW

Storylines is back and feeling good, not great, after Sunday's matinee with the Seattle Sounders. Getting a point in the standings against a traditionally tough matchup for the Loons? That's good. Getting three points in the standings against a traditionally tough opponent that just so happens to be struggling in their recent run of form? That would have been great. While the opportunity to escalate the Sounders' slump would have certainly continued building the momentum the Loons have built since Leagues Cup, there's no need to hit any panic buttons. Seattle is a better team than their recent run of form would indicate. And taking a point from a team that's currently sitting in third in the Western Conference is nothing to scoff at.

In comparison to Seattle, the Colorado Rapids are a squad that has embodied the definition of "struggle" throughout their 2023 campaign. The Loons' opponent for this Wednesday finds itself in the basement of the Western Conference, with just three wins total on the season. And, their woes go beyond their record, as they come into their match with the Loons without starting goalkeeper William Yarbrough, as he will be sidelined for the rest of the season with a torn meniscus. If their last match was any indication, a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of LAFC, Yarbrough will be sorely missed by Colorado.
