Sussex County Miners News Release
Augusta, NJ - Backed by strong pitching and early offense, the Sussex County Miners (23-11) cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats (16-20) on Friday night at Skylands Stadium.
The home side scored all six of their runs in the first three innings. a three run outburst in the first inning was started by Chuck Taylor's 3rd home run of the season, giving the Miners a 1-0 lead just two batters into the frame. an RBI double by Audy Ciriaco, followed by a run scoring single by Cito Culver pushed the lead to 3-0.
In the second inning, Martin Figueroa launched a 415 foot home run to make it 4-0. The shot was Figueroa's 3rd home run of the season as well.
The third inning saw the same formula as the first. Kaleo Johnson - who had walked in the first to set up Ciriaco - hit a single. Ciriaco again doubled Johnson home, with Culver following by knocking Ciriaco home and giving the Miners all of the offense they would need at 6-0.
With that early lead, Miners starting pitcher Baylor Sundahl would then make sure that Tri-City would not get into the game. The right-hander would only allow one hit and walk two over 5 1/3 innings of work, while striking out three ValleyCats. Jalen Miller, Sr. would come on to get the final two outs of the sixth, and Tyler Luneke struck out the side in the seventh to cap off a stellar pitching performance by the Miners on the evening.
The two teams were scheduled to play a second game, but severe thunderstorms would halt any further playing before game two could get started.
The Miners and ValleyCats will be back at Skylands Stadium tomorrow for a newly scheduled doubleheader, with game one beginning at 4:05 pm.
