MYRTLE BEACH, S.C (JUNE 14, 2015) -- On Saturday night, right-hander Mike Broadway made his Major League debut at the age of 28 after more than ten seasons in the minor leagues. He struck out the first batter he faced while tossing a scoreless inning for the San Francisco Giants in a 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Broadway, who pitched for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, in 2008 and 2009, became the 132nd former Pelican to make the Majors after his time in Myrtle Beach, and the seventh to debut this season.

Broadway, 28, made his debut with the Giants, an organization he has been with for only two seasons. The Paducah, Kentucky, native was originally drafted by the Braves in the fourth round of the 2005 MLB Draft and spent seven seasons with Atlanta, making it as high as Triple-A in 2010. He then spent one season with both the Padres and the Nationals in Double-A and Triple-A. He also played in the Hawaiian Winter Baseball League, the Arizona Fall League, and the Venezuelan Winter League. The right-hander made 258 minor league appearances and 23 starts before his first big league appearance on Saturday. He dispatched the first batter he faced, striking out Arizona third baseman Jake Lamb on three pitches.

The long-time minor leaguer earned his promotion by posting a 1-0 record and a 1.35 ERA for the Giants' Triple-A Sacramento River Cats in 22 bullpen outings. In 26 2/3 innings, Broadway had surrendered just 16 hits and no home runs while compiling a 39-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Coming up with the Braves, Broadway first made it up to the Grand Strand with Myrtle Beach in 2008 when the club was an Atlanta affiliate. In 22 games, including two starts, he posted a 3.40 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 21 walks in 50 1/3 innings of work. He spent most of the following year with the Birds, totaling 35 appearances, third-most on the club, going 2-7 with a 4.50 ERA.

Broadway is the seventh former Pelicans player to make the big leagues for the first time this season, joining Keone Kela (with Pelicans in 2014, debuted with Rangers), Odubel Herrera (2012-2014, Phillies), Wilfredo Boscan (2011, Pirates), Hanser Alberto (2012-2014, Rangers), Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (2013-2014, Rangers), and Joey Gallo (2014, Rangers).

The Pelicans wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark against the Lynchburg Hillcats at 6:05 p.m. ET.

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
