ZEBULON, NC - The Dash broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth with three runs off reliever Andy Otero and escaped Five County Stadium with a series clinching 5-2 win against the Mudcats on Sunday night in Zebulon.
Otero (L, 0-2, 2.12 ERA) took over in the ninth with the game tied 2-2 and was immediately greeted with a leadoff single by Winston-Salem (27-35) designated hitter Ethan Wilson. Wilson scored two batters later when Jake Peter brought him in with a RBI double. Peter was 1-for-5 in the game with a RBI and stretched his league high hitting streak to 17 consecutive games. Otero allowed three hits in the inning and only one of the three runs he allowed in the ninth were earned.
The Mudcats (30-32) originally led 2-0 after getting two run scoring singles from Johan Camargo and Sean Godfrey in the second. Both hits came with two outs in the inning and were hit off Dash starter Robinson Leyer.
Leyer allowed just those two second inning runs and five hits in the start. He pitched through the fifth and finished the game with two walks and four strikeouts.
Brian Clark followed Leyer out of the bullpen and picked up the win after shutting out the Mudcats over three full innings. Clark (W, 2-2, 2.87 ERA) struck out four and walked one in his appearance.
The Dash trailed 2-0 until Nolan Earley tied the game in the fourth with a two-run single to right off Carolina starter Yean Carlos Gil. Earley was caught at second on the hit, but both Chris Jacobs and Jeremy Dowdy scored to tie the game 2-2.
Gil pitched into the sixth and allowed just two runs on five hits. He walked three, struck out two and did not earn a decision. He also held the Dash without a hit over the first three innings of Sunday's game.
Caleb Dirks relieved him in the sixth with two on and two outs in the inning. Dirks left both runners on base and kept the game locked at 2-2 through six. Dirks pitched the seventh and eighth as well for Carolina and finished his scoreless appearance with two walks and three strikeouts over two and 1/3 innings pitched.
Michael Ynoa worked a perfect ninth for the Dash and recorded his second save of the season. Ynoa struck out two and finished the game by getting Camargo to ground out to third.
The loss dropped the Mudcats back to two games below .500 on the season. Carolina's elimination fell to three with seven left to play after their loss to the Dash and Myrtle Beach victory at home against Lynchburg. The Pelicans eliminated the Dash from first half championship contention with their victory on Sunday night in Myrtle Beach.
Carolina took game one on Friday night, but lost the series two games to one. They also finished 3-4 in their seven game home stand.
The Mudcats play again on Monday night in Frederick as they face the Keys for the first time away from Five County Stadium. RHP Andrew Waszak will start for the Mudcats in game one of the three game series in Frederick. The Keys will send RHP David Hess for the series opener on Monday.
