Midland Needs Extras to Take Opener

San Antonio Missions News Release

Midland outlasted San Antonio 5-4 in 11 innings Thursday night at Wolff Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Thursday's contest began with a solid pitcher's duel between San Antonio's Luis Diaz and Midland's Corey Walter. The RockHounds' right-hander allowed just two hits and one walk over five shutout innings. Walter threw 35 of his 52 pitches for strikes.

Diaz fanned a season-high eight in his six innings, but left trailing 3-0. Midland struck for the game's first run in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Beau Taylor RBI single. The 'Hounds added their other two runs against Diaz via the long ball, Jaycob Brugman in the fifth and Taylor in the sixth.

Brugman helped Midland push its lead to four in the top of the seventh against reliever Eric Yardley with a sacrifice fly.

However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Missions' bats finally woke up, and in a big way, beginning with Auston Bousfield's leadoff homer off reliever Trey Cochran-Gill. After Gill retired the next two batters, Mike Olt kept the inning alive with an infield single. Gill compounded things when he plunked next batter, Taylor Lindsey. That brought up Gabriel Quintana, who tied the game with a blast onto the berm in left.

The contest remained tied through the ninth; marking the first time San Antonio had a game reach extras in 2016.

In the top of the 11th, Midland finally broke through as Danny Oh's two-out, bloop RBI single to center off reliever Adam Cimber (0-1) put the visitors up for good.

Jake Sanchez worked a perfect bottom of the 11th to close out the RockHound victory, while earning his second save. Ryan Doolittle (2-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

San Antonio (10-23) resumes its four-game series with Midland (20-13) Friday on IPAC Mazda Road Cap Giveaway Night (first 1,500 fans) presented by KCWX. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (2-2, 3.29) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Joel Seddon (1-2, 10.36).

Notes: Late Thursday, the San Diego Padres announced a pair of moves affecting the Missions' roster. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg was transferred from San Antonio to Extended Spring Training. Replacing Hellweg on the San Antonio roster is RH Seth Rosin, who arrived from Triple-A El Paso.
