WOODBRIDGE, Va. - After a full day washed out by Mother Nature, the sun shone brightly on Tuesday morning, setting a beautiful backdrop for a 10:30 a.m. first pitch from Pfitzner Stadium. "Let's play two" was the theme of the afternoon as the P-Nats and Winston-Salem Dash dueled in a doubleheader in front of nearly 8,000 raucous pre-teens filling the stadium seating for the P-Nats' first annual Middle School Math Day sponsored by Pepsi and SOARathome.org.
With representation from ten different middle schools in the Northern Virginia area, Middle School Math day can be chalked up as a rousing success. Kids participated in contests between innings and were given an opportunity to experience the values of math in a real-life setting. Schools received booklets of baseball statistics at the end of the day to take back to their classrooms to apply the vast numerology of baseball to their everyday studies.
"Being the first time we tried having this event, we were a little unsure about how everything would work out," said Jonathan Griffith, general manager of the Potomac Nationals, "but the kids showed up in full force, they were loud, they were into the game, and they were really excited to be at the ballpark."
On the field, the kids were treated to a pitching gem from P-Nat starter Erik Arnesen and a titanic blast off the bat of outfielder Jesus Valdez as the Nationals took home the victory by a final score of 3-2. The home team dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 10-2.
Be sure to come out to the ballpark on Wednesday night for the final game of the first homestand of the season as the Potomac Nationals take on the Winston-Salem Dash in the rubber game of their three-game set. Wednesday is Belly Buster Night at Pfitzner Stadium where only $12 will get you a grandstand ticket to the game and all-you-can-eat Moe's Southwest Grill burritos, hamburgers, hot dogs, and more!
