WOODBRIDGE, Va. - The Winston-Salem Dash might as well have been conducting a hitting clinic in Woodbridge on Wednesday night as they racked up a whopping 18 hits in their 6-3 victory over the P-Nats. Those 18 hits included 15 straight singles, which wore down the P-Nat pitching staff that looked gassed after their doubleheader on Tuesday.
The top four hitters in the Dash lineup went a combined 8-19 with four runs and five RBI with a double each recorded by shortstop Greg Paiml and right-fielder Sandoval Sanchez. All but one Dash starter enjoyed a multi-hit game while only the designated hitter, Kyle Shelton, was ironically held hitless by the P-Nat pitching staff.
The Nationals entered the game with high hopes due to the fact that the man toeing the rubber to start the contest, left-hander Tom Milone, had been off to such a sensational start to his season. Coming into the game, Milone boasted a superhuman 0.79 ERA and was forming a dynamic right-left duo at the front of the rotation with teammate Erik Arnesen.
Things went south from the very beginning for Milone as three of the first four batters reached base via a base hit with two runs coming in on the double by Sanchez off the base of the left-center field wall. All in all Milone gave up five runs on nine hits raising his ERA to 3.45.
Though the hit parade continued to cascade upon the shoulders of the P-Nats, they refused to get buried in the rubble. The home team clawed their way back into the ballgame with a three-run second inning punctuated by a two-run triple off the bat of Tim Pahuta who lined a frozen rope into the alley in right-center field, bringing home Chris Marrero and Jesus Valdez to make it a 4-3 contest.
That was all the closer the P-Nats would get however as the Dash added a run each in the fifth and seventh innings to hold the Nats at bay, getting 2 1/3 solid innings from reliever Santo Luis and a dominating ninth inning from Hector Santiago who struck out two in his lone inning of work.
The P-Nats will find themselves on the road again starting tomorrow with the first of a four-game set with the Frederick Keys. You can hear all the action on www.potomacnationals.com with the pregame show coming to you live from Frederick at 6:45 ET with the first pitch slated for 7:05 ET.
