Middle of Order Lacks Punch as Sacramento Falls Flat

May 16, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - In their first game before noon of the 2016 season, the Sacramento River Cats (15-24) fell 5-1 to the Memphis Redbirds (15-20) Monday morning. The River Cats offense was only able to produce one run on seven hits despite Jarrett Parker continuing to stay hot at the plate.

Sacramento only managed three hits after their lone run in the fourth inning. They have now failed to score after the sixth inning in all three games this series. The middle of the order for Sacramento continued their struggles from the previous two games, as the third and fourth spots in the lineup are now 2-for-24 (.083) this series with two walks and seven strikeouts. Batting in the three slot, Ryan Lollis is now hitless in his 12 at-bats this series. Cleanup hitter Mac Williamson is 1-for-9 (.111) and is hitting just .111 (2-for-18) since being back in the Sacramento lineup.

Parker, however, is now 7-for-11 (.636) in this series and seems to enjoy facing Memphis, as in the four-game series last year, the right-fielder hit .333 (4-for-12) with four runs scored. Grant Green was the offensive producer today, driving in his 26th run with two on and two out. Tied with Gorkys Hernandez for the team-lead in games played (36), Green came in hitting just .235 (4-for-17) with runners on base and two out.

Chris Stratton made his eighth start for the River Cats today, going six innings and throwing a team-high 97 pitches. The right-hander has struggled on the road this season, holding a 2-2 record with a 9.41 ERA away from Raley Field. Stratton was up-and-down in today's contest, setting the Redbirds down in order in the first inning but allowing two hits and a run in the second. His third inning mirrored his first while Memphis was once again able to score in the fourth.

Stratton would finish allowing five runs (all earned), while giving up eight hits along with a season-high three walks and a season-low two strikeouts. For the season, the Mississippi native has now given up 28 of his 34 earned runs on the road.

The River Cats came into Monday morning's game 5-5 in day games thus far this season but had a 5-1 mark in day games on the road. Sacramento has now committed in error in each game this series and four straight overall. Tomorrow's game will be crucial as Sacramento looks to split the season-series against Memphis, a feat they have not accomplished since 2014.

It's an early start time again tomorrow as RHP Joan Gregorio (0-1, 5.40) will make his second Triple-A start for River Cats. He will be facing off against Memphis' RHP J.C. Sulbaran (2-3, 5.08) with the first pitch set for 9:05 a.m. (PT). The game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air at ESPN 1320 at 7 p.m. (PT).
