PCL1 Fresno Grizzlies

Nashville takes third in a row from Grizzlies

May 16, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

In their first game without Tony Kemp since June 10 of last season, the Grizzlies tried to snap a skid of ugly road losses in his hometown Monday evening, but dropped their third straight to open a four-game series against the Nashville Sounds.

A scoreless game into the sixth, the wheels fell off suddenly for the Grizzlies. A two-out bases-loaded dropped fly ball in left field plated three runs for the Sounds off the bat of Rangel Ravelo, and Ravelo scored a batter later on a Bryan Anderson RBI double. The three un-earned runs spoiled an otherwise scoreless outing for Grizz starter Mike Hauschild, who tossed five and a third innings, allowing four hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Fresno got up off the mat a half-inning later, as Matt Duffy led off the seventh with a solo homer to the left field alley, cutting the score to 4-1. It extended his current club-high hit streak to nine games, and the reigning PCL MVP has hit safely in 11 of 12 games.

Nashville starter Zach Neal, who days earlier made his Major League debut in three relief innings for the Oakland A's, lasted six innings. He allowed just three hits and a walk, with one strikeout. The lone run he allowed was on the Duffy dinger. The Grizzlies (15-22) dropped to 0-19 this season when trailing after eight innings, and 2-13 when the opponent scores first, unable to mount a rally against the Nashville bullpen.

Unfortunately for Fresno, it marked the club's sixth consecutive road loss (5-12 road record), dating back to losing the final three games in El Paso May 7-9. The Grizzlies will look to avoid the four-game sweep tomorrow, prior to an off-day Wednesday, and then four games in Memphis. Tomorrow's probable starters are LHP Tommy Shirley (3-2, 3.00) for Fresno, and LHP Dillon Overton (1-4 4.89) for Nashville. Game time for the series finale will be 4:35 PT / 6:35 CT.
