Calgary Vipers News Release
Receiving an outstanding start the Calgary Vipers (5-7) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (6-4) 4-2 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Pitcher Mark Michael (1-0) was great in tossing seven innings while allowing only one run on three hits and striking out six. Out of the bullpen J.J. Whetsel threw a three-up, three-down inning with a strikeout for the hold and Claudio Galva (2) recorded the save by leaving the tying runs on base.
Trailing 1-0 the Vipers got a two-run home run from Matt Kavanaugh in the third inning to take the lead for good. Alexander Francisco (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in six innings.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a Brent Metheny home run for a 1-0 advantage.
Calgary responded in the third frame as Louie Templeton doubled and Kavanaugh smacked his first home run of the season for a 2-1 lead.
The Vipers added a run in the fourth when Wilver Perez walked, stole second base, and with two outs Justin Tellam delivered a clutch run batted in single for a 3-1 advantage.
Calgary added another run in the eighth inning for a 4-1 lead as Jeff Giacomini singled, Jonny Kaplan doubled, and Giacomini scored on a wild pitch.
The Capitals threatened in the ninth frame when Todd Linden was hit by a pitch, Metheny walked, and Nick Valdez drove in a run with a base hit for a 4-2 score but two runners would be left in scoring position to end the game.
This series in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Edmonton Capitals concludes on Wiener Wednesday June 8th at 6:30 where it will also be $5.00 Student Night.
