Edmonton Capitals News Release

Calgary, AB - The Edmonton Capitals dropped their second game in a row to the provincial rival Calgary Vipers on Tuesday, but the battle was much tighter than Monday's 11-1 rout, as the Caps were edged 4-2.

Tuesday's affair was a pitchers' duel between Edmonton's Alexander Francisco and Calgary's Mark Michael, with Michael earning the victory, tossing seven innings and holding the Caps to one run on three hits with six strikeouts. Francisco gave up three runs on four hits while striking out three through six innings of work to take the loss.

A bright spot for the Caps was the continued hot hitting of former Viper and first baseman Brent Metheny, who smashed his first home run of the season on Tuesday and scored both of the team's runs, bumping his batting average on the season up to .471. Catcher Nick Valdez drove in Metheny to earn Edmonton's other RBI.

Calgary's first baseman also hit a home run on Tuesday, as Matt Kavanaugh went deep for a two-run shot to account for half of his team's runs. Despite surrendering a run in the top of the ninth, Claudio Galva earned the save for the home side.

The Caps are now 6-4 on the North American League season, while the Vipers closed the gap in the North Division and improved to 5-7. The teams play their last of 11 straight games against each other on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Foothills Stadium.

The Caps return home to TELUS Field Thursday through Monday to play the North Division-leading Lake County Fielders, who are owned by actor Kevin Costner. The first game of the series is another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and 100.3 The Bear. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
