Battle of Alberta Rages on with 11-1 Vipers Victory

Calgary, AB - A six-run fifth inning highlighted a big offensive night for the Calgary Vipers, who exacted some revenge on the Edmonton Capitals with an 11-1 victory on Monday night at Foothills Stadium.

Heading into the game, the Caps had won three straight over the Vipers Friday through Sunday in Edmonton, but the Vipers proved the 2011 battle of Alberta will be a battle indeed with Monday's dominant victory. Edmonton dropped to 6-3 on the young season, while Calgary improved to 4-7.

Caps centre fielder Todd Linden had the team's only extra-base hit with a double in the third inning, driving in left fielder Cody Nowlin for the lone run. Starting pitcher Daryl Arreola tossed the opening four innings and surrendered nine earned runs, while Jorge Vasquez worked the next three and David Davidson pitched the eighth.

Vipers catcher Justin Tellam and starting pitcher Manny Ayala did a large chunk of the team's offensive damage with two RBI each, while Ayala pitched six innings, giving up just one run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Caps have two more games left with the Vipers to close out 11 straight games against their provincial rivals. The teams play Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. before finally parting ways and taking on other North American League competition.

The next Caps home series runs Thursday through Monday at TELUS Field against the North Division rival Lake County Fielders, who are owned by Kevin Costner. The first game of the series is another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and 100.3 The Bear. Game time is 7 p.m.
