Chico Outlaws News Release

Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii - The Maui Na Koa Ikaika scored three runs in the ninth inning off Chico reliever Jason Roenicke (0-1) and defeated the Outlaws 3-2 on Monday night at Iron Maehara Stadium. The win was Maui's fourth in five games over Chico and all four have been of the comeback variety.

It was a pitchers duel between Chico's Demetrius Banks and Maui's Dan Delucia throughout most of the game. The only runs until the ninth came in the top of the fifth. With two out and nobody on, Oscar Sigala singled, Banks was hit by a pitch, and Jay Pecci walked. That brought up Bobby Hill, and the former major leaguer laced a single back up the middle to give the Outlaws a 2-0 lead.

Banks was sensational for Chico, pitching seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits and striking out seven. The lefty did walk six, but worked out of jams all night, as Maui left fifteen runners on base, most of them while Banks was on the hill.

Omar Aguilar pitched a shutout eighth before Roenicke, who hadn't allowed a run in six plus innings this season, came on for the ninth. He walked the leadoff man Gered Mochizuki and it was all downhill from there. J.J. Sherill hit a ground rule double to make it a 2-1 game. A Jowen Murray-Thornton groundout tied it and an intentional walk to Stephen Pearson loaded the bases for Nick Fitzgerald with one out. Chico brought in leftfielder Adam Buschini as a fifth infielder, but it did not matter, as Fitzgerald drew a four-pitch walk-off walk from Roenicke.

The loss was the fifth in six games for Chico, who will conclude the six game series with Maui on Tuesday at Iron Maehara Stadium. First pitch is 4:05 p.m. local time (7:05 Pacific) and the action can be heard on the Outlaws Baseball Network at chicooutlaws.com.
