Columbus, OH - After scoring at least six runs in three straight games, the Syracuse Mets' offense went cold in a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Clippers on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,100 people at Huntington Park. Despite the loss, Syracuse still maintains a half-game lead for first place in the International League North Division standings.
Columbus (20-14) started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Brandon Barnes homered for the second day in a row to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead.
The Clippers added a second home run in the fourth. Trayce Thompson hit a two-out home run to left-center field for a 2-0 Clippers edge.
In the fifth Columbus scored again. Eric Stamets led off with a double and moved to third on an Oscar Mercado flyout to right field. Stamets then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Flaherty to left field, extending the lead to 3-0.
Syracuse (20-15) avoided being shut out for the first time this year with a run in the top of the ninth. Danny Espinosa led off with a home run over the right-center-field wall to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
The Mets and Clippers wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. RHP Corey Oswalt will start for Syracuse opposite Columbus RHP Adam Plutko. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
