MetroStars History In Openers: The MetroStars are 2-4 all-time in season openers... They are 1-0 at Giants Stadium and 1-4 on the road... In overall home openers, the team is 4-2 all-time, which includes a 2-1 win last season against New England Revolution on April 7. Third Earliest Season Opener For MetroStars: The season-opener against the Revolution will be the third earliest opener date in team history. The earliest all-time for the team was when they faced the Miami Fusion at Lockhart Stadium on March 20, 1999. The second was in 1997, when they faced Los Angeles in the Rose Bowl on March 22. As per team home openers, the upcoming game against the Revolution is the earliest home opener at Giants Stadium. The previous date was March 28, 1999, against the Columbus Crew. June 15 Schedule Change...Again: The MetroStars June 15 time of game at Giants Stadium against the Los Angeles Galaxy has been moved back to its original time of 4:00 p.m. from 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will still be broadcast on ESPN2. New Faces: The team welcomes new faces to the 2002 squad with the additions of Brad Davis, Marcelo Balboa, Brian Kamler, Diego Serna, Joe Addo, Winston Griffiths, and Sam Forko. The team is awaiting official paperwork for M/F Byron Alvarez, before he can officially join the roster. The MetroStars roster currently consists of 17 main players, with two players on the developmental spots (Davis, Klinger on Nike Project 40). The team has one open spot on the main roster and two open with developmental. Mathis To Face Germany: MetroStars midfielder/forward Clint Mathis was part of a 20-man roster called up this past week to the U.S. National Team for this week's friendly match against World Cup-bound Germany at Rostock, Germany. The U.S. will face the three-time World Cup champions in Rostock on Wednesday in a match that will be shown tape-delayed on both ESPN2 (10 p.m. ET) and Telemundo (11:30 p.m. ET). Fans can follow the action live from Germany online via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics, beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET. Special Security News: MetroStars fans attending home games this year should expect to see an increased security presence at Giants Stadium, in addition to necessary security checks to all persons entering the facility. MLS and Giants Stadium has a variety of procedures in place for 2002, including but not limited to: stringent inspections of all deliveries; improved parking procedures and heightened scrutiny of unauthorized vehicles; and all persons entering MLS matches are subject to search, including employees, fans, officials and players. In addition, large bags, backpacks, bottles, umbrellas, and flag sticks will not be permitted and small bags and purses will be subject to search. The stadium and management also reserves the right to deny entrance to any item deemed to be dangerous or inappropriate. Refined credential policies have also been put in place, making all briefcases, cameras and equipment subject to inspection. With the aforementioned policies in place, it is recommended that all media, spectators and game day support staff arrive at their respective venues early in order to allow for the additional time required to gain access to Giants Stadium. Attention Singers!: Wannabe singers will once again get a rare opportunity to go from singing in the shower to singing in front of thousands of people at Giants Stadium when the MetroStars hold their second annual open auditions for national anthem singers on Thursday, April 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Macy's Court at Westfield Shoppingtown Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ. Three talented performers will be selected from the auditions. The first-place winner will perform the national anthem prior to the U.S.- Jamaica international friendly at Giants Stadium on May 16, while two other winners will perform at a MetroStars regular season game. The auditions are open to all age groups and all types of performers. Musical groups and instrumental performances are also welcome. To audition, contestants can register online at MetroStars.com, by phone by calling 201-583-7038, or by mailing your information to the attention of MetroStars Auditions, One Harmon Plaza, 3rd Floor, Secaucus, NJ, 07094. Walk-ups are welcome from 4:00 -6:00 p.m. ET on April 4 at Macy's Court in the shopping center where the auditions will take place. Based on the three-hour audition window, space will be extremely limited, so fans are urged to register early to ensure their chance of performing. MetroStars players will be among the judges, and will also be available to sign autographs. MetroStars To Host Crew, World-Cup Bound Ecuador In March 27 Doubleheader: The MetroStars will host a major doubleheader at Giants Stadium on Wednesday, March 27, beginning at 7 p.m. with the MetroStars facing the Columbus Crew and capped by World Cup-bound Ecuador facing Bulgaria in an international friendly immediately following. In order to facilitate the doubleheader, the MetroStars-Crew game originally scheduled for Saturday, March 30 has been moved to the 27th. The doubleheader is being staged in conjunction with the New Jersey-based sports promoter Champions World. All tickets purchased for the original March 30th date will be honored for the doubleheader, and all MetroMember season ticket holders pay no additional cost for the international game. Tickets for the doubleheader are currently on sale through all Ticketmaster locations in the tri-state area, or by calling the MetroStars at 1-888-4Metrotix. Individual tickets for March 27 are priced at $25, $35, $45, and $55, and group tickets are available from $20-$55 per person. Ecuador, making their first-ever appearance this summer in the World Cup, will face Bulgaria, which was a semifinalist at World Cup USA '94 and appeared in the 1996 European Championships. Ecuador's last appearance at Giants Stadium was Monday, July 2, 2001 when they defeated El Salvador, 1-0, before a crowd off 35,891.
