March 22, 2002 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Charity Newsies will lend a hand to the Columbus Crew this weekend, as both groups kick off the 2002 Major League Soccer season for charity at the team's opening game against the Chicago Fire this Saturday, March 23, at 4 p.m. at Columbus Crew Stadium. The game will be televised live on ABC Sports.

Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Charity Newsie volunteer members will be distributing a Crew/Newsie special publication and accepting donations to the Charity Newsie cause at all Kroger stores in Franklin County. The publication contains information about Charity Newsies and the Columbus Crew as the team commences its seventh MLS season and the Newsies enter their 96th drive season. The Charity Newsies will also be distributing Crew game schedules and stickers. All proceeds from funds raised will go directly to clothing schoolchildren in Franklin County.

At 2:30 p.m. Saturday the Charity Newsies will also be distributing the publication as gates open prior to the game and will form the "Parade of Champions"- the formulation of the tunnel through which Crew players run when they are introduced.

"We are very pleased about this exciting opportunity with the Crew as they kick off their 2002 season. This opportunity will help us to raise funds for kids in need of clothing for school and increase community awareness of Charity Newsies and what our organization does," said Charity Newsies 2002 Drive Chairman Bob Cloud. "We look forward to our partnership with the team and hope to establish a tradition that will last for years to come."

"This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to partner with an organization that has been committed to giving back to Columbus for over 95 years," said Todd Adams, Director of New Business Development/Special Projects. "We hope that this venture leads to another long-standing tradition for needy children in Central Ohio."

For the past 95 years, Charity Newsies, an organization comprised of more than 700 member volunteers, has been raising funds to supply children in need with brand new school clothes. The Newsies work all year to raise funds for their cause. 100 percent of all proceeds raised goes directly to clothing more than 12,500 disadvantaged schoolchildren. Those interested in making a donation or learning more about the Charity Newsies can call (614) 263-4300 or visit them online at www.charitynewsies.org.
