Phoenix Mercury News Release
Phoenix, AZ - The Phoenix Mercury announced today their 11-player active roster for opening day of the 2004 WNBA season. Highlighted with the WNBA's 2004 No.1 Draft Pick, Diana Taurasi and the addition of Penny Taylor with the No.1 Pick in the WNBA Dispersal Draft, the new-look Mercury are ready for action when they open the season Thursday night inside America West Arena.
Under the direction of first year Head Coach Carrie Graf, the Mercury added veteran leadership to the roster this spring with the addition of seven-year pro Nikki McCray and the resigning of veteran forward Adrian Williams. To reach the 11-player active roster, the club released guards Tonya Edwards and Iziane Castro-Marques. Edwina Brown (ruptured left Achilles) and Ashley Robinson (left knee tendonitis) were placed on the team's injured list and will be required to miss a minimum of three games.
Phoenix went 2-1 in the preseason, defeating the Seattle Storm by 39 and the Sacramento Monarchs by nine, both games inside America West Arena. The club averaged 79.0 ppg in the preseason under the direction of Graf.
"I'm really excited about the direction we are headed this season," said Graf. "The off-season additions in Penny Taylor, Diana (Taurasi) and Nikki McCray were incredible. Being able to resign key veterans in Adrian Williams and Kayte Christensen will help propel us to the next level."
In 2004 the Mercury will celebrate their eighth season in the WNBA and boast three playoff appearances and a trip to the 1998 WNBA Finals. Under the direction of Carrie Graf, the Mercury will face a 34-game regular season schedule that will run May 20 through September 19. The WNBA will break for the month of August so that WNBA players may join their National Teams in preparation for the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The Olympics will begin August 14 and conclude August 28. Tickets for all Mercury home games start as low as $8 and are all in the lower level. Single game tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (602) 252-WNBA or by visiting the America West Arena Ticket Office. Mercury season tickets, group tickets and flex packages are also available and can be purchased by calling (602) 379-7878.
