Charlotte Sting Announce Opening Day Roster
May 19, 2004 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Charlotte Sting News Release
The Charlotte Sting announced today that they have finalized the roster, waiving guards Rita Williams and Marla Brumfield, forward Jenni Benningfield and center Tera Bjorklund. Each WNBA team was required to set their rosters today at 11 active players and up to two injured reserve players.
"The Charlotte Sting will compete and play smart basketball at every opportunity," said general manager and head coach Trudi Lacey. "Roster cut down day is always tough because the players work extremely hard and are all good people that you enjoy having around. This will be a highly competitive season and we feel our roster has further been strengthened by our offseason acquisitions. We are excited to have a nice mix of veterans and young talent to work with and look forward to the season."
Veteran players Dawn Staley, Andrea Stinson and Allison Feaster will lead the way, complimented by rookie draft picks Nicole Powell and Kelly Mazzante. Tammy Sutton-Brown, Charlotte Smith-Taylor and Tynesha Lewis return from last season, while Olympia Scott-Richardson (free agent), Mery Andrade (dispersal draft) and La'Keshia Frett (acquired in a trade) join the team in 2004.
