Carolina Mudcats News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - Joey Meneses was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and a career high five RBI in a 14-6 series opening victory for the Mudcats in Lynchburg on Monday night. Braxton Davidson was 3-for-4 with a triple and Stephen Gaylor, Keith Curcio and Joseph Odom each had two hits while helping Carolina win its fourth straight game.
The Mudcats trailed 3-0 through the fourth before scoring six runs and collecting five hits in the fifth. Carolina also scored twice in the seventh and scored six more runs in the eighth while scoring a total of 14 runs on 15 hits in Monday's series opener.
Justus Sheffield started for the Hillcats and pitched through four scoreless frames before allowing six runs (five earned) in the fifth. Sheffield (4-3, 3.61) gave up five hits, walked three, struck out three and left the game with one out in the fifth.
Max Povse earned the win for the Mudcats and snapped a two start losing streak despite allowing four earned runs over his first four innings pitched. Povse (4-4, 3.82) walked one, struck out six and allowed eight hits in the victory.
Meneses doubled in the fourth, had a two-run double in the fifth, hit a solo home run in the seventh and drove in two more runs with a bases loaded single in the eighth. He now has 17 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBI on the season.
Meneses is also batting .576/.600/.909 over his last eight games with six doubles, one triple, one home run and 12 RBI. He was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week ending on June 12 before the game.
The Mudcats led 6-4 after the fifth, but the lead fell to just one after Lynchburg's Mark Mathias hit a solo home run off reliever Zach Quintana in the sixth. Quintana bounced back and eventually worked through an inning and 2/3 with just the one run allowed.
Chase Johnson-Mullins relieved Quintana in the seventh and went on to pitch an inning and 1/3 scoreless with two walks and two strikeouts. Evan Phillips then worked the ninth and allowed a run and three hits while appearing in a game for the second consecutive day.
Reliever Luke Eubank of the Hillcats followed Sheffield and held the Mudcats scoreless over an inning and 2/3 before leaving the game. Antonio Romero then entered and allowed eight runs (seven earned) over the next inning and 1/3 pitched. He gave up Meneses' home run to start the seventh and Meneses' bases loaded hit in the six run eighth. He also allowed Odom's double and Davidson's triple.
Davidson's triple was his first of the season and second in his professional career. He was 3-for-4 in the game and has reached safely in eight of his last nine games. He also scored three times in Monday's victory, including immediately after an error was made at the end of his triple in the eighth.
Gaylor was 2-for-5 in the Carolina victory and has 10 hits over his last four games since returning from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Odom was 2-for-5 and stretched his current hitting streak to a career high nine straight games. He has also hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games.
