Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Ian Happ recorded three hits and drove in a run, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost to the Frederick Keys 5-4 Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
After both teams failed to score in the first, Keys (34-31) right fielder Conor Bierfeldt doubled to left with one out in the second. Two batters later, Johan Heim doubled him home to give Frederick a 1-0 lead.
After Pelicans (33-31) starter Jeremy Null (2-3) retired the first batter in the top of the third, the Keys strung together six consecutive singles to take control of the game with a 5-0 lead. Wynston Sawyer and Jomar Reyes both connected on RBI singles while Bierfeldt plated two with a hit of his own. The six hits was a season-high in an inning for the Keys, and the most the Birds have given up in any frame this year.
Down 5-0 in the bottom of the third, Pelicans center fielder Rashad Crawford came up with a two-out single. Charcer Burks followed with a single before Happ was able to pull a single into right to get the Pelicans on the board and make it 5-1. Keys starter Ivan Hernandez then uncorked back-to-back wild pitches to allow Burks to score and make it 5-2.
Happ has now reached in nine of his last ten games.
Still trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Jason Vosler began the frame with a single to right before Daniel Spingola drove him to third with a base hit. With runners at the corners and one out, Erick Castillo reached on a fielder's choice to score Vosler and make it a 5-3 game.
The Pelicans bullpen was outstanding all evening. Daury Torrez and Jordan Minch combined to work four innings of scoreless relief. They struck out four and allowed just three hits and one walk.
After Keys reliever Mike Burke worked two perfect innings in the seventh and eighth, he allowed a leadoff single to Spingola to begin the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Gleyber Torres flied out deep to left, and then Burke fanned Andrew Ely to push the Pelicans down to their final out. Crawford came through with a double to right center to score Spingola and make it a one-run game. However, Burks flew out to deep left to end the ballgame.
The Pelicans have now lost five of their last six games. Austin Urban (1-0) worked three innings of relief to earn the win for Frederick.
The Birds will turn to RHP Jake Stinnett (4-3, 4.24 ERA) for the final game of a three-game series with the Keys. RHP Matthew Grimes (7-3, 1.66 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Frederick. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and all fans can enjoy BOGO Hebrew National hot dogs. The Pelicans will also host a send-off celebration for the Coastal Carolina University baseball team at 6:30 p.m. prior to Wednesday's game. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
