Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS N.C. - Intimidators pitching spotted the Delmarva Shorebirds an early lead they could not climb back from in a 10-4 loss at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System on Friday night.
Luis Martinez started for the Intimidators and struggled in his fourth start of the year. After setting down the Shorebirds (7-8) in the top of the first 1-2-3, the righty labored through Shorebird rallies in the second and third innings. Martinez allowed three runs to score in the second and two in the third.
Yermin Mercedes led the way for the Shorebirds at the plate going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI and a two-run homer. Mercedes homer in the third inning marked the end of the night for Martinez (0-3) who was hung with his third loss of the season.
The Intimidators struggled to get much going at the plate against Shorebirds starter Reid Love. Love (2-0) made his first start of his professional career and allowed just one run in 5 and 1/3 innings while walking two, scattering three hits, and striking out six to earn his second win of the season.
The bats finally awoke for the Intimidators in the bottom of the sixth. Grant Massey continued his hot hitting with a double to left and came in to score the Intimidators first run of the night on a wild pitch. Massey went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and factored into both of the Intimidators rallies.
Trailing 10-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Intimidators batted around and plated three runs thanks to four walks issued in the inning, three of them with the bases loaded. The rally ended when the bases were left loaded to end the eighth, and the Intimidators went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.
Danny Mendick turned in another great all-around performance for Kannapolis making a great diving play at second in the fourth and going 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.
The Intimidators continue their 4-game home stand on Saturday. Kannapolis sends LHP Ryan Riga (0-1, 13.06 ERA) to the mound against Delmarva's RHP Logan Long (0-0, 0.50 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Saturday the Intimidators will salute the reading all-stars of the Stanly County Schools and will host the Girl Scouts for the first scout night of the year at Intimidators stadium.
