Memphis Redbirds News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - The Memphis Redbirds (29-27) shut out the Omaha Storm Chasers (25-30) 7-0 and 5-0 in a double header Sunday afternoon at Werner Park. The victories pushed the Redbirds' first-place lead over the Storm Chaser to 3 1/2 games in the American Northern Division.
Memphis leads the PCL with nine combination shutouts and is 5-1 in double-header games this season.
In game one, Memphis starter Carlos Martinez tossed four strong innings on his way to getting stretched out as a regular starter. Martinez only gave up two hits, two walks, and hit a batter while striking out four on 64 pitches (36 strikes).
Jamie Romak had four RBIs and Brock Peterson had two hits and scored twice. Ryan Jackson, Justin Christian, and Vance Albitz each had a two-hit day.
Omaha starting pitcher Justin Marks (1-4) took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits with three walks and two strike outs in two innings pitched.
The Redbirds got to Marks early, making the most of two bases-loaded opportunities in the second inning. Kolten Wong knocked in two with the bases juiced and Romak followed with a grand slam, his 10th homer.
The 6-0 score in favor of the visitors led to Marks being replaced by Buddy Baumann to start the third inning. Peterson reached the reliever for a solo home run (11) to extend the Redbirds lead to 7-0.
Omaha relievers George Sherrill and Brian Sanches combined for the final three scoreless frames of the game.
Jorge Rondon (2-5) picked up the win and pitched a clean fifth and sixth, only allowing a hit and a walk. Ramon Delgado finished the game for Memphis, throwing a 1-2-3 seventh inning with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, Memphis defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers 5-0 on a great outing from starter Nick Additon . The contest was a makeup of a rain-postponed May 4 game.
Starter Nick Additon (4-2) went the distance for the Redbirds. It was his first complete game and fourth quality start of the season. Additon only allowed three hits on the day with two walks and five strikeouts, throwing 90 pitches (57 strikes).
Travis Tartamella paced the Redbirds with three RBIs. Rob Johnson had two RBIs and scored twice while Jermaine Curtis added a run, a hit and a walk.
Curtis and Christian provided singles that led to Tartamella's second Triple-A homer in the second inning. The 3-0 lead held up for the next four innings.
In the sixth, Curtis drew a two-out walk and Johnson blasted his fifth homer of the year to make the Memphis advantage 5-0.
Omaha starter Will Smith (4-3) took the loss, giving up five runs over six innings on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Kelvin Herrera finished the game for the Storm Chasers.
Game four of the series is at 7:05 p.m. CT on Monday at Werner Park. The Redbirds send right-hander Maikel Cleto (2-2, 5.67) to the hill.
