Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - A day after the pitching staff allowed 11 runs in an 11-10 loss to Peoria, the Clinton arms got back on track lead by six solid frames from right-hander Yoervis Medina in a 4-2 win over the Chiefs. Medina yielded just a run on eight hits and struck out six, and three LumberKings' relievers combined for just one more run over the final three innings.

Medina (W, 4-0) fell behind 1-0 in the second inning as Justin Bour, Peoria's hero from the previous night, doubled and scored on a single by Luis Flores. The Moron, Venezuela native would get help from the defense as catcher Blake Ochoa turned Vinnie Catricala's throw to the plate into an out on the bases, throwing down to third to retire Jae-Hoon Ha to end the inning.

The Kings failed to score against Chiefs' right-hander Robinson Lopez in his first start since coming to the Chicago Cubs system from Atlanta, but Lopez ended up out of the game after just two innings as a result of four walks. Right-hander Manolin DeLeon came on for a scoreless third, but hit the wall in the fourth.

DeLeon (L, 1-1) walked Ochoa and Matt Cerione and surrendered a single to Gabriel Noriega to load the bases. With two outs, Nick Franklin coaxed a walk to bring Ochoa home for the tying run. The next batter, Mickey Wiswall, lifted a flare single to center just out of the reach of Anthony Giansanti to score Cerione and Noriega for a 3-1 lead.

The Chiefs would cut the deficit to 3-2 after Medina's exit. Right-hander Fray Martinez (H, 2) gave up a one-out double to Hak-Ju Lee and a single to Logan Watkins before exiting. Left-hander Jose Jimenez came on and yielded an RBI single to Matt Cerda. Jimenez (H, 4) would retire Bour before loading the base on a walk, but would get out of the jam as he sat down Nelson Perez on a swinging strike three.

Ochoa belted a solo home run to left to lead off the bottom of the seventh against right-hander Corey Martin, pushing the lead back to two runs. Right-hander Brandon Josselyn kept it that way, working past a one-out walk in the eighth and retiring the side in order in the ninth. Josselyn (S, 15) sealed the game as he broke Bour's bat on a dribbler to the mound.

Wiswall finished 2-for-5 with the game-winning RBI, while Ochoa added insurance with the home run as part of a 2-for-2 day. Catricala went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Eight of the nine Peoria starters had hits as the Chiefs out-hit the LumberKings, 11-8. Lee finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored, while Bour (2-for-5) and Ha (2-for-3) added multi-hit games in the losing effort.

The LumberKings (29-24) now move a half-game ahead of Kane County (29-25) for the top playoff spot in the West Division. The series with Peoria (25-26) continues with game three tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. Left-hander Nick Czyz (3-4, 5.14) will make his 11th start with Clinton. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
