
Kernels pound out 16 hits in 10-2 win

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels pounded out 16 hits and tied a team high with six doubles in a 10-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 3,243 fans at Perfect Game Field on Sunday afternoon. Randal Grichuk went 3-4 with two doubles and 3 RBI and Casey Haerther was 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI.
The Kernels struck quickly as Jon Karcich led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run off Wisconsin starter Efrain Nieves (3-4). Nieves gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits over 1.1 innings in taking the loss. The Kernels added six runs in the second and tacked on two more in the eighth. Wisconsin scored their runs on a solo home run by D'Vontrey Richardson and a sac fly by Cameron Garfield.
Jon Karcich finished the game 3-5 with a double and two runs scored to go with his home run, Matt Long was 2-4 with a triple and RBI, and Jeremy Cruz was 2-4 with a double and RBI.
Kernels starter Max Russell allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two over 4.2 innings in a no-decision effort. Yeison Almeida (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless and hitless relief after Carson Andrew came on to face one batter in the top of the fifth. David Carpenter worked a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.
The win improves the Kernels second half record to 31-23 and 74-48 overall. Wisconsin falls to 25-30 and 51-72. The two teams continue their four game series on Monday night at Perfect Game Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm with the gates opening at 5:30 pm.
