Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Henry Rodriguez and Justin Reed belted two-run home runs and Didi Gregorius added a single, double, and triple as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 12-7 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 9,163 at Fifth Third Field. It was the Dragons second straight victory at home, giving them consecutive wins in Dayton for the first time since June 18-19. The 12-run uprising marked the Dragons biggest day on offense since they scored 15 runs against Fort Wayne on June 28.
The two teams traded leads in the early innings. Lake County held three different leads before the Dragons took control with a four-run seventh inning.
Lake County's Adam Abraham hit a solo home run in the second inning to get the scoring started. The Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of back-to-back walks, a double steal by Ryan LaMarre and Josh Garton, and a sacrifice fly by Dominic D'Anna. In the third, Lake County jumped back ahead, getting a two-run double by Casey Frawley to take a 3-1 lead.
Dayton answered with three runs in the bottom of the third, keyed by a two-run double by Henry Rodriguez and a bases loaded walk to Garton to give Dayton a 4-3 lead. Lake County regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth to jump ahead 5-4.
But it was all Dayton the rest of the way. The Dragons scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead, then added four more in the sixth, keyed by a two-run triple by Gregorius followed by a two-run home run by Rodriguez. It was Rodriguez's 14th home run of the season and it gave Dayton a 10-5 lead.
In the seventh, Justin Reed blasted a two-run home run to right, his first homer with the Dragons, to make it 12-5. The Captains took advantage of three straight walks in the ninth inning by Dragons reliever Junior Martinez to score twice in the inning and close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson worked the first five innings to earn the win (7-6). He allowed six hits and five runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Dragons collected nine hits. Gregorius went 3 for 5, scoring three runs and driving in two. Rodriguez was 2 for 5 with four runs batted in and extended his hitting streak to eight straight games. Reed was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and two driven in.
The Dragons (14-40, 44-79) host the Captains (26-29, 70-54) in the third game of the series on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Clayton Shunick (1-1, 3.47) will start for Dayton against Vidal Nuno (5-6, 5.05). The series will conclude Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
