Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies shutout the Harrisburg Senators 4-0 Wednesday night in front of 8,036 fans at FNB Field, the third largest crowd in modern Senators history. Senators starter Kyle McGowin tossed seven innings of one run ball in the loss.
Peter Alonso hit a solo home run in the first off McGowin to put Binghamton in front 1-0. After the next batter, Kevin Taylor, hit a double, McGowin retired the next 18 batters before a two out single by Tomas Nido in the seventh.
McGowin (2-1) allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings while striking out seven and walking one. It's the fourth straight start the right-hander has lasted at least six innings and allowed two earned runs scoreless. It's the second time in the last four starts he's faced just two over the minimum.
"He's keeping that ball down. He's down with everything. He's getting ahead of hitters, whereas last year he was falling behind hitters and elevating," Senators manager Matt LeCroy said. "He had a good Arizona Fall League with (Senators pitching coach Michael Tejera) and it's translated over here to the season. Hopefully he can keep it rolling."
"He's confident, and that's half the battle. Once guys get confidence in all the phases of the game, they start to have a swagger. He's got that swagger right now. He's really done a nice job this year. I'm really happy for him, that's why you go to the fall league and winter ball: to put yourself in a good position when you come here for the season and he's done that."
Binghamton starter Joseph Shaw (1-3) worked five and a third shutout innings to earn the win.
The Rumble Ponies added three runs to the lead in the eighth. After loading the bases on a single, double and a walk, Levi Michael drove in a pair with a two-run single. Two batters later, Kevin Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 Binghamton.
Dan Gamache finished 3-4 in the loss, the only Senator with multiple hits. Daniel Murphy went 0-3 with a walk in his eighth rehab game with the Senators.
The Senators and Rumble Ponies play the rubber match of their three-game series Thursday afternoon. Wirkin Estevez takes the bump for the Senators against Binghamton starter Scott Copeland. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at FNB Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports Harrisburg 96.5 & 95.3 FM and 1400 AM or at www.cbssportsharrisburg.com beginning at 11:45 a.m.
