Trenton Thunder News Release
A first-inning lead and stingy pitching set the tone for the Richmond Flying Squirrels against the Thunder, who fell, 5-1, on Wednesday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
After a two-out single by Ryan Howard, the Flying Squirrels (29-26) plated the game's first run on a double to left-center by Dylan Davis off Thunder (34-23) right-hander Trevor Stephan.
Stephan went on to strike out six batters over five innings, dueling with Richmond lefty Garrett Williams, who held the Thunder hitless through five and one-third innings. Williams walked four batters and allowed at least one baserunner in five of his six innings of work, but kept Trenton scoreless before yielding to the bullpen.
The Thunder put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Dillon McNamara, threatening to tie the score. When Billy Fleming popped out to shallow right field, Trey Amburgey attempted to tag up and score from third, but second baseman Miguel Gomez threw home to cut down Amburgey and end the threat.
Domingo Acevedo, who had entered in relief for the Thunder to begin the sixth, fired two scoreless innings to begin his outing, but surrendered a two-run single to Jerry Sands in the eighth inning and a pair of RBI-singles in the ninth, allowing the Flying Squirrels to extend their lead to 5-0.
In the ninth, Ryan McBroom hit a towering solo home run to left field off Patrick Ruotolo, his first double-A homer of the season, but a Zack Zehner triple and a Jhalan Jackson walk went for naught, as a swinging strikeout ended the game.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Thursday night at 7pm against the Flying Squirrels. The Thunder have yet to announced their starting pitcher, while RHP Chase Johnson (0-1, 3.72) will go for Richmond. The evening will feature a post-game Fireworks Spectacular. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
