Trenton, N.J. - The Flying Squirrels (29-26) limited the Trenton Thunder (34-23) to four hits in a 5-1 victory on Wednesday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Squirrels lefty Garrett Williams turned in his most impressive outing of the year, blanking the Thunder offense over six innings. Richmond also pounded out 12 hits, including three from Dylan Davis to even the series. The rubber match is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. Richmond returns to Funnville on Friday, June 8 with a Free Shirt Friday and RVA's Best Happy Hour. Details for the next homestand can be found here
Dylan Davis delivered put the Squirrels up once again with an RBI double in the first inning. Trenton starter Trevor Stephan picked up a pair of quick outs to open the game before Ryan Howard yanked a base hit into left field. Davis then followed with double into the gap in left centerfield, giving Richmond a 1-0 advantage. The Davis double drove home his team-leading 26th run of the season.
Richmond lefty Garrett Williams was the story in the middle game on Wednesday for Richmond. Williams (2-4) made is 11th start for the Squirrels and stymied the Thunder through six innings, matching his longest outing of the season to earn the win. He worked around a hit batter in the first and a walk in the second, fourth fifth and sixth innings. Trenton did not record a hit until Ryan McBroom lined a base hit into left field with one out in the sixth inning. McBroom's base hit moved the runner Trey Amburgey to third base with one out. Billy Flemming then flew out to second base man Miguel Gomez up the right field line and Amburgey attempted to score from third. Gomez snapped towards home, tossed a strike to catcher Aramis Garcia, who then slapped the tag into the belly of the arriving Amburgey, completing the double play and keeping the Squirrels lead intact, 1-0.
Trenton's Stephan worked four scoreless innings after the run allowed in the first. He evaded a base runner in each of his five frames, bur allowed just the one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out six but suffered the defeat.
Trenton turned to reliever Domingo Acevedo after Stephan's outing ended. Acevedo worked a scoreless sixth and seventh innings, but ran into trouble in the eighth. Miguel Gomez opened the frame with a bloop double up the right field line and Ryan Howard worked a walk. With two outs Jerry Sands roped a two-run single into left field for a 3-0 lead in the eighth and Miguel Gomez and Dylan Davis added RBI singles in the ninth.
Richmond reliver Dillon McNamara tossed a pair of scoreless innings against his former team, earning his first hold of the year. Patrick Ruotolo tossed the ninth. Ruotolo allowed a solo homer to McBroom, the only run allowed on the night for the Richmond staff.
The Flying Squirrels conclude the seven-game road trip Thursday with finale against the Trenton Thunder at Arm & Hammer Park. RHP Chase Johnson (0-1, 2.84) will make the start for the Squirrels against Thunder LHP Ryan Bollinger (3-0, 1.44). Richmond will be back in Funnville on June 8-14.
