Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (25-18) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-1 at Shaw Park on Wednesday night.
Goldeyes' starting pitcher Kevin McGovern (6-3) picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits over eight innings. McGovern walked none, struck out five, and went to a three-ball count just three times in 30 batters faced.
"Good night for our team," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Kevin was obviously really, really good. He was more efficient with his strike-throwing today. The two-seam fastball was excellent, velocity was good, he used both sides of the plate well, and the slider was good. He didn't have to use his change-up, so that shows how good those two pitches were for him tonight."
The Goldeyes took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Perez drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to second when Willy Garcia walked on a full count. Wes Darvill followed with a sharp, groundball single up the middle that scored Perez.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jordan Hovey doubled down the left field line leading off. Kevin Garcia moved Hovey to third with a groundball to shortstop, and the Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead when Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
Darvill lined a single to centre with one out in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second on a groundball from James Harris. Darvill took third on a balk by RedHawks' starter Bret Helton, and after Kyle Martin drew a walk, Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-out, two-run double to left-centre that made it 4-0. It marked Abercrombie's 347th and 348th RBI in a Goldeyes' uniform, moving him into first place on the club's all-time list. Luis Alen held the previous record at 347 RBI.
Fargo-Moorhead's (29-16) lone run came in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Comstock.
Victor Capellan struck out two during a perfect top of the ninth to earn his 16th save.
The Goldeyes welcome the St. Paul Saints for a five-game series beginning Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Joel Seddon (1-1, 4.19) faces right-hander Jake Matthys (5-2, 5.09). Advance tickets are on sale now by visiting www.goldeyes.com/tickets or by visiting the box office at Shaw Park.
