T-Bones Sneak by Canaries Late

July 3, 2019 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

The Sioux Falls Canaries lost a tough one on the road at Kansas City Wednesday night. The T-Bones walked off the Birds (21-22) 2-1 in 11 innings.

Shawn O'Malley delivered a walk-off single to win it for Kansas City (22-21). The result sets up a Fourth of July rubber game between the two teams on Thursday night.

The game belonged to the pitchers; no team managed an extra-base hit and all three runs scored on RBI singles.

Canaries starter Keaton Steele threw three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. With men on first and second and one out, O'Malley hit a fly ball to right-center field. Canaries right fielder Mike Hart ran down the ball and made an outstanding diving catch for the second out.

The excitement from Hart's catch turned to concern; Hart was shaken up on the play and left the game with a hamstring strain. Hart, who is second on the Birds in OPS this year, is considered day-to-day and not expected to miss significant time.

One batter later, T-Bones third baseman Taylor Sparks singled to right to make it 1-0.

Steele went six innings for the Canaries, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out five.

The Birds tied the score in the seventh. Burt Reynolds, playing his first game with the Birds in 2019 after coming over via a trade, was hit by a pitch to take first base. Josh Rehwaldt singled to keep the line moving, and Clint Coulter delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1.

The Birds' bullpen was solid toward the end of the game. Luis Pollorena pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, and Reilly Hovis threw the eighth and ninth allowing just one hit.

Austin Orvis pitched a scoreless 10th, but in the 11th allowed a two-out single and a walk to bring up O'Malley. The T-Bones' shortstop hit a single to shallow right field to seal the win for Kansas City.
