Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - RHP Drew McDaniel (W, 4-8) shut out the Down East Wood Ducks (18-19) over six innings to hand the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (19-18) their third win in a row by a score of, 3-1, Tuesday night Atrium Health Ballpark.
With the win and a loss by Charleston, the Cannon Ballers gain ground in the race for the Carolina League's second half crown at now four games behind the RiverDogs. Down East falls to six games behind the Carolina Mudcats, having already punched their ticket to the playoffs in the first half.
McDaniel struck out five and walked just one with two hits allowed en route to his fourth victory of the season. RHP Horacio Andujar (H, 3) allowed Down East's only run in the top of the seventh inning, picking up two punchouts and walking one along the way. Finally, RHP Billy Seidl (S, 12) earned his league-leading twelfth save of the season, striking out two.
Kannapolis struck for two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI double to center field by Calvin Harris. The newly added fourth-round pick by the Chicago White Sox crushed a line drive for his first of two hits on the night in the third, scoring Cristopher DeGuzman and Jacob Gonzalez to put the Cannon Ballers on top, 2-0.
Andujar's one run allowed came in the top of the seventh inning with Anthony Calarco batting. Ian Moller stood at third base when the righty pitcher balked, allowing the Wood Ducks runner to score, cutting the Kannapolis lead to, 2-1.
The Ballers put an insurance run on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with Mario Camilletti's first and only hit of the night. The league-leader in walks and on-base percentage poked a line drive into right field, scoring Drake Logan and pushing the Ballers to a, 3-1, advantage, a lead that the visiting Wood Ducks did not come back from.
RHP Aldrin Batista makes his first start at the Single-A level Wednesday night in the second of six total matchups on the week between the Cannon Ballers and Wood Ducks. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Winning Wednesday showdown.
Fans can purchase tickets for any remaining home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
