August 8, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Salem, VA - The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) dropped the first game of a 12-game road trip, falling 9-8 to the Salem Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) in extra innings. Salem (17-20, 47-53) got a walk-off single from Alexis Hernandez, while Augusta (16-20, 47-54) got strong debuts from two new faces in the series opener, but were hurt badly by fielding mistakes in the loss. .

Augusta began the day with additions to the roster, adding Pier-Olivier Boucher, Will Verdung III, Zack Austin, Shay Schanaman, and Riley Frey to their roster and promoting Jared Johnson, Hurston Waldrep, and Cory Acton to rome. Boucher and Verdung III both made their debuts, with Augusta's starting nine featuring just two players who were on the opening day roster.

Both teams went scoreless in the first, until Salem sprung for three runs off of Luis Vargas, who made his fourth start of the year for the GreenJackets. Vargas responded with a 1-2-3 third, while Augusta went without a hit through three. Ambioris Tavarez led off the fourth with a double, took third, and then scored on an RBI groundout from Jace Grady to put Augusta on the board.

Neither team would score from the top of the fourth through the conclusion of the sixth. Estarlin Rodriguez pitched the sixth, relieving Vargas after 5 innings, while Nathanel Cruz entered in relief of Salem starter Gabriel Jackson in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, Augusta's bats awoke with a flurry, plating six runs in the frame to take a 7-3 lead. P-O Boucher and Will Verdung III both got their first Augusta hits as Boucher, Jacob Godman, E.J. Exposito, Cam Magee, and Jace Grady each drove in runs in the frame.

However, the Red Sox got all four runs back in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a two-out error from Grady to tie the game at seven apiece. Elison Joseph got the final out of the seventh with a strikeout, and both teams went scoreless over the remaining frames to push the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, Augusta pushed across the ghost runner with a Compton RBI groundout, and Cory Wall entered to try to close it out. However, Cutter Coffey lined a single tie the game 8-8, before a line drive to left field resulted in a slip from Boucher that brought home the winning run. Salem's 9-8 victory marks a third straight loss for Augusta.

Augusta remains on the road for a two-week trip to the commonwealth of Virginia to take on the Salem Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) and Fredericksburg Nationals (Washington Nationals), before returning home for the final 12 games at SRP Park this year!
