FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Hoping to remain undefeated against the Marksmen this season, the Mayhem were met by stingy defense and solid goaltending and were shut out in a 1-0 result.
The Mayhem had a dismal start to the night, being grossly outshot by the Marksmen in the opening period. Ian Sylves stopped all 18 shots he faced in the first 20 minutes of play, and the Mayhem entered the first intermission being outshot 18-7.
Macon was forced to fight off four consecutive minor penalties in the first half of the opening frame, and they managed to do so with impressive penalty killing.
More superb goaltending took place in the middle stanza, as Sylves and Fayetteville goaltender Dillon Kelley went head-to-head. Sylves added ten saves to his total, while Kelley added another dozen to his.
Five minutes into the third, Stathis Soumelidis maneuvered through the Fayetteville defense skillfully and fired a backhand shot at the goal from the right circle. However, Kelley kept the stalemate intact and the game remained scoreless.
Finally, halfway through the third at the end of an extensive Marksmen power play, Fayetteville captain Jake Hauswirth ripped a one-timer from the right circle and beat Sylves inside the short side post. His goal would be his 7th of the season and ended an extremely long scoreless drought.
Pulling Sylves in exchange for a sixth attacker in the closing minutes, the Mayhem put on one last flurry of shots on Kelley's net. The Fayetteville netminder stood his ground, and earned the first professional shutout of his career.
Kelley was credited with his seventh victory of the season, stopping all 32 Macon shots. Sylves was charged with the defeat, despite stopping 35 of 36 attempts and earning Third Star of the Game honors. The Mayhem will wrap up 2018 in Roanoke against the Rail Yard Dawgs on Saturday, December 29th. Puck drops at 7:05 pm ET.
