Mayfield Returns to Bridgeport; Schempp Reassigned

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- The New York Islanders announced today defenseman Scott Mayfield has been returned on loan to the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In addition, the Islanders have reassigned center Kyle Schempp to the Missouri Mavericks (ECHL), while the Sound Tigers have released forward Rocco Carzo from his Professional Tryout (PTO).

Mayfield, 24, has played three games with the Islanders this season, recording three points (one goal, two assists), 17 penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating. He scored the Islanders' first goal in a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers last Tuesday at Barclays Center. Mayfield has also played 14 games with the Sound Tigers this season, recording three points (one goal, two assists), 20 penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating.

A native of St. Louis, MO, Mayfield made six appearances with the Islanders last season, notching his first NHL goal on April 9, 2016 against the Buffalo Sabres. He signed a two-year NHL contract with New York on July 13, 2016. Overall, Mayfield has played 14 games with the Islanders and 214 AHL contests with the Sound Tigers. He has recorded 47 points (10 goals, 37 assists) and 404 penalty minutes with Bridgeport.

The 6'5, 218-pound defenseman was originally selected by the Islanders in the second round (34th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Schempp, 22, has played five games with the Sound Tigers this season, recording an assist and two penalty minutes. He also notched five points (two goals, three assists) and 14 penalty minutes in 13 games with the Mavericks earlier this season, including his first professional goal on Nov. 5th against the Tulsa Oilers.

Prior to turning pro, the rookie forward notched 66 points (29 goals, 37 assists) and 62 penalty minutes in 121 games with Ferris State University. Schempp was named captain of the Bulldogs during his final season. The Saginaw, MI native also spent one season with the Traverse City North Stars (North American Hockey League) and Sioux Falls Stampede (United States Hockey League) before his three-year career at Ferris State.

Schempp, a 6'0, 178-pound forward, was originally selected by the Islanders in the sixth round (155th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Carzo, 26, logged two penalty minutes in his Sound Tigers debut on Dec. 10th at Binghamton.
