Mayberry's 13th inning blast is not enough
May 30, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - John Mayberry's towering two-run homer to left brought the Clinton LumberKings within one run in the bottom of the 13th inning, but the L-Kings still lost a heartbreaker to Cedar Rapids, 5-4. Hainley Statia's RBI triple highlighted a 3-run inning for the Kernels in the top of the 13th.
After a 98 minute rain delay to start the game, the LumberKings and Kernels settled into a pitcher's duel for most of the night between seven game-winner Nick Adenhart and 18-year-old phenom Omar Poveda. Adenhart pitched seven innings for the Kernels, allowing two unearned runs on five hits. He also struck out seven in a no-decision. Poveda posted a similar line, allowing a pair of earned runs on four hits through seven innings, striking out eight.
The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 as the teams entered bonus baseball. Lefty Julian Cordero (L, 2-4) didn't allow a run in the 11th or 12th innings, but was roughed up in the top of the 13th. Kernels designated hitter Flint Wipke belted a leadoff triple and came home on an error by L-Kings shortstop Matt Smith. Juan Carlos Garcia entered the game in relief of Cordero, allowing an inherited run to cross on another triple, this time by shortstop Hainley Statia. Statia would come home a batter later for the all-important third run of the inning as Brad Coon hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Mayberry's 13th inning heroics came off Kernels reliever Chris Howell after Freddie Thon had started the inning with a sharp single to center. Still, Howell (S, 1) was able to preserve the win with three straight outs to end the ballgame. Tim Mattison (W, 2-3) got the win out of the pen, giving up just one hit through three innings.
Thon's 2-for-6 night extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He was one of three L-Kings with two hits, joining Mayberry (2-for-6) and John Whittleman (2-for-4).
The LumberKings (18-33) and the Kernels (24-28) continue the series tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
