Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - After surrendering a first inning run, starter Mitch Atkins allowed nothing more in the next six frames as the Peoria Chiefs went on to defeat the Kane County Cougars 4-2 Tuesday night at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs scored four runs off of starter Jared Lansford, who came into the game with a 0.90 ERA. Three of the four runs scored off Lansford were earned and matched the most earned runs the right-hander had given up in a single start on the season.

With the Chiefs trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Alberto Garcia doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a ground out by Matt Ciaramella. After a Jake Muyco walked, Davy Gregg picked up his second hit of the game, a sharp single to center to score Garcia and tie the game. Two batters later, Mark Reed delivered an RBI infield single to bring home Muyco and put the Chiefs up 2-1.

Peoria added another in the bottom of inning number six. Kyle Reynolds and Alberto Garcia led off the inning with back-to-back infield singles. With runners at the corners, Lansford delivered a wild pitch, scoring Reynolds from third. That same at-bat, Ciaramella bounced one through the right side of the infield to put runner at the corners yet again. Muyco came to the plate next and popped up to second base. Jesus Valdez, who came in to pinch-run for Garcia, bluffed like he was going to tag up and go home, forcing second baseman Frank Martinez to fire to the dish. The throw bounced passed catcher Anthony Recker allowing Valdez to score to give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead.

Kane County got off to a quick start in the first. Leadoff man Mike Massaro hit a bloop single to left and advanced to second on a errant pick-off throw. Two outs later, Jeff Baisley continued his hot hitting with his run-scoring triple into the right-centerfield gap.

The Cougars had an opportunity for more in their half of the second. They loaded the bases with only one away, but Atkins induced Massaro to pop out to third and struck out Wes Long to end the threat.

Kane County was able to muster up one more run. That came in the eighth. Long doubled to lead off the inning and one batter later was plated on an RBI groundout by Baisley, his second RBI of the game and his league-leading 44th run driven-in on the year to the deficit to 4-2.

Atkins went six-plus innings allowing just the first inning run. The righty gave up five hits and struck out seven and walked just one. Matt Avery inherited a couple of Cougar baserunners with nobody out in the sixth but neither of them advanced from their respective bases. He ended up giving up one run in two innings of work. Ed Campusano struck out the side in the ninth to record his 16th save of the year. Lansford went five innings for Kane County giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits while suffering his second loss of the season.
